Labour shadow cabinet minister Jo Stevens, 54, hospitalised with Covid

Labour MP Jo Stevens is being treated for coronavirus in hospital, her team has said.

The shadow culture secretary who represents Cardiff Central, was said to have been ‘laying low’ due to symptoms of the virus since the end of December.

On Saturday, her team tweeted: ‘Jo has asked us to let you know that she is being treated in hospital for Covid. Thanks for all your good wishes we will give an update when we can.’

Politicians of all stripes have wished her a speedy recovery.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer replied to the tweet, saying: ‘Get well soon Jo, a dear friend and colleague.’

First Minister Mark Drakeford said: ‘All of our thoughts and best wishes are with Jo for a speedy recovery.

‘Thank you to Jo’s constituency team for continuing to support Cardiff Central constituents at this difficult time.’

Conservative minister Nadhim Zahawi, who is leading the Government’s vaccine rollout, tweeted: ‘Wishing you a speedy recovery Jo.’

Tonight’s announcement was the first tweet from Ms Stephens’ account since December 31, when it was first revealed she was battling Covid-19.

It read: ‘Jo has been laid low with COVID for a while so on behalf of us and Jo, Happy New Year to everyone across #CardiffCentral.

‘Here’s to a healthier and better 2021. Tonight we’ll be thinking of all those who have lost loved ones to this awful virus.’

Ms Stevens, 54, has been the MP for Cardiff Central since 2015.

Before she was struck down with coronavirus, the Labour frontbencher was calling for social media companies to crack down on anti-vax misinformation.

Several politicians have fallen ill with Covid-19, including Prime Minister Boris Johnson who was in intensive care in April, and Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Beyond the UK, outgoing US president Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron have also tested positive.
