Jess Phillips, Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley, has quizzed the Metropolitan Police in response to the then-serving police officer admitting to the murder of Sarah Everard. This confession has led to Dame Cressida Dick facing calls to resign.
Dame Cressida Dick said she recognised “a precious bond of trust has been damaged” when she delivered her statement.
The Labour MP stressed the importance of answering the public’s questions as she went on the BBC Two Newsnight programme to share her many questions.
“I was incredibly disappointed with her statement which didn’t answer any questions that the public might actually have about for example the vetting procedures,”she said.
“Sorrow and undoubtedly heartfelt, but what are the actions that she is going to take to ensure that this never happens again?

“Those are the questions that I think Cressida Dick has got to come out and answer very very quickly.
“I’m not here to suggest that getting rid of Cressida Dick will change the police force across the country’s attitude towards violence against women, because it just simply won’t,” Ms Phillips continued.
The MP for Birmingham Yardley noted that she had sent these questions to the Met Police last night, in hopes of receiving answers.
“I’d like to know about how vetting failed so spectacularly in this case,” she continued.

“If an allegation comes forward like this – is there an immediate suspension?
“How many officers are under investigation?
“How many are suspended?
“I want to know exactly what the policy is within, not just the Metropolitan, but all police forces in regard to these cases?
“Without these answers, me as an individual woman, let alone as a politician, I am afraid to say trust is very badly damaged and it wont come back without proper public answers.”
