The MP for Norwich South and Shadow Minister for Sustainable Economics shared extracts from a piece written by former diplomat Craig Murray. The piece references how special adviser to Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings allegedly travelled to Barnard Castle in County Durham two days prior to a deal on vaccine development being struck by a company in the town. In his tweet, Mr Lewis said: “How interesting: ‘On 12 April Dominic Cummings was seen in Castle Barnard during lockdown.

“Two days later, GlaxoSmithKline of Barnard Castle signed an agreement to develop and manufacture a Covid-19 vaccine with Sanofi of France.

“Of course, that could be coincidence.’

However, some called on the MP to remove the tweet as it was verging on a conspiracy theory.

One person said: “Please consider taking this down.

“This is a conspiracy theory and you are an MP.”

Another person also said: “Clive, I am very proud to be one of your constituents.

Although Mr Johnson supported his senior aide, the Prime Minister has faced mounting pressure to sack Mr Cummings.

According to The Guardian and Daily Mirror, reported the adviser had travelled to his family’s home in County Durham during the lockdown.

Despite the Government stating the public must not travel to second homes or visit family members during the lockdown, it was alleged Mr Cummings made the 260 mile trip to his parents’ home.

It was later stated by Mr Cummings the had travelled to be near relatives when his wife developed COVID-19 symptoms at the end of March.

The Observer and Daily Mirror also alleged the adviser had travelled to Barnard Castle in April.

It was then alleged he was seen in Durham again on April 19 by The Observer and Mirror.

However, in support of the adviser, Mr Johnson stated he had done the right thing during his press briefing on Sunday.

Mr Johnson said: “I’ve concluded that in travelling to find the right kind of childcare at the moment when he and his wife were about to be incapacitated by coronavirus – and when he had no alternative – I think he followed the instincts of every father and every parent, and I do not mark him down for that.

“I believe that in every respect he has acted responsibly, and legally and with integrity and with the overwhelming aim of stopping the spread of this virus and saving lives.”

A Downing Street source also said: “His sister and nieces had volunteered to help so he went to a house near to but separate from his extended family in case their help was needed.

“His sister shopped for the family and left everything outside.”
