King’s ‘lack of sparkle’ to blame for Australian Commonwealth Games withdrawal

Australian PM says King Charles III will ‘focus on Commonwealth’

King Charles’s “lack of sparkle” could be to blame for Australia ditching the Commonwealth Games, according to a columnist based Down Under.

The state of Victoria in the southeast of the country recently announced that it would no longer host the sporting event in 2026 due to greater domestic financial needs.

However, as Australia is reportedly reconsidering the monarchy – with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promising a referendum on becoming a republic if he wins another term in office – some believe the country is missing the late Queen Elizabeth, and are now questioning their connection to the royals.

Writing in The Australian, Nikki Gemmell claims that Charles ought to dig into his own “enormous wealth” if he wants Australia to continue hosting the Games.

She also suggested the sporting event is “rooted in old certainties of empire and monarchy and colonies; certainties that are breaking down, and seemingly rapidly in this post-Elizabethan era.”

The journalist added: “Recent balcony appearances of the royals show the incredible disappearing family. Physically, and in our minds too.

“Charles doesn’t have the sparkle of his mother, and the endurance of the monarchy relies on enchantment; or in other words, mass delusion.

“We’re just not getting it with the new bloke, and the cancellation of the games feels like a symptom of this.”

But writing in the Daily Mail Angela Mollard fought back against suggestions that Australia was ready to part ways with the royals, even though King Charles does not appear on their new $5 bills.

She acknowledged that the country is too consumed with its own affairs to think too much about the monarchy right now, but insisted the drama of it still appealed to younger generations.

Ms Mollard said: “We are captivated by the tantrums and tiaras. We might not have quite the reverence we afforded the late Queen Elizabeth, but Megxit, Spare and The Crown have repositioned the royals as light entertainment for a generation who engage more with the drama and less the history.

“However disrespectful it might sound, the royal family are the Kardashians with crowns for many younger Australians.”

A poll cited in the article found that support for Australia to become a republic is not as high some may believe, with only 43 percent of Aussies in favour when they were quizzed following the death of Queen Elizabeth.

Even if Australia did become a republic they would not necessarily also leave the Commonwealth, as they may choose to follow a model similar to Barbados which is now an independent republic within the Commonwealth.
