King urged to travel more by readers after success of Germany visit
King Charles and Camilla wave to crowds from balcony in Hamburg
King Charles III travelled to Germany last week for his first state visit overseas since ascending the throne last September. As part of a three-day visit, the King and Queen Camilla attended engagements in Berlin and Hamburg. A new Express.co.uk poll has shown nine in ten readers support the Sovereign conducting more state visits.
During a state banquet, at Schloss Bellevue, the official residence of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the King said he was “utterly convinced” that the bond between the UK and Germany “will grow ever stronger”.
Author and historian Sir Anthony Seldon said the state visit is a “really big deal”, arguing that the royals make a much bigger impression than a visit by the Prime Minister. He said: “We consistently underestimate the significance.”
In a poll that ran from 10am on Thursday, March 30, to 2.30pm on Tuesday, April 4, Express.co.uk asked readers: “Should King Charles make more state visits to forge ties with the world?”
A total of 1,086 votes were cast with the overwhelming majority, 90 percent (972 people) answering, “yes”, the King should go on more state visits. However, 10 percent (104 people) said, “no”, he should not and a further 10 people said they did not know.
In the comments left below the accompanying article readers discussed whether the King should travel more.

Many readers argued that state visits were important to the future of the Monarchy, like username Galsimom1, who commented: “I don’t feel that some English people totally understand how important the stability of the UK and the Commonwealth depends on the Monarchy. Just look at how your Prime Minister’s residence currently has a revolving door.”
Username TheBride said: “Yes, he should definitely visit the US and Canada.”
Another, username MarlowRobinson, said: “Yes, the King should travel as much as he wishes however, I expect Prince William and the lovely Kate will also increasingly become more important on the world’s stage as the years go by.”
However, other readers thought the King should focus his efforts closer to home and make amends with his family, like username englishproud, who said the King should improve relationships with the British public and visit Commonwealth nations where he is head of state: “The future of the success or failure of his reign at home and within the Commonwealth depends upon his carrying out these two vital areas of importance.”
Username natal pointed to the recent fallout with Charles’s son, Prince Harry, and said that a reconciliation “would improve his image greatly”.
