King urged by readers to promote ‘popular’ niece as working royal
King Charles has ‘no plan to cut working royals’ says expert
Zara Tindall should be made a working member of the Royal Family to help the Firm manage the workload, a new Express.co.uk poll has found.
King Charles has the support of 11 working royals who are responsible for conducting official duties and engagements but the slimming-down of this group means that they are conducting fewer appearances.
The King alongside Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Anne, Sir Timothy Laurence, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra undertook seven percent fewer engagements in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year.
This is down 31 percent from pre-pandemic figures in 2019 when Queen Elizabeth II had the support of 15 working royals.
Canadian journalist and royal specialist, Patricia Treble told The Morning Show earlier this month that the King King needs to “figure out how to live up to the late Queen’s maxim, ‘I have to be seen to be believed’.”
One way he could achieve this is by increasing the number of working royals to include some of his nieces and nephews.

In a poll that ran from 7am on Saturday, July 15, to 10.30am on Wednesday, July 19, Express.co.uk asked readers: “Should King Charles increase the number of working royals?”
Overall, 2,979 readers responded with the vast majority, 71 percent (2,117 people) answering “yes” he should, compared with 27 percent (814 people) who said “no” and two percent (48 people) who did not know.
Then readers were asked: “Who should be promoted?” With 2,411 people casting their votes behind their favourite.
Overall, the Princess Royal’s daughter Zara was the most popular with 35 percent (844 people) of the vote. This was followed by nineteen-year-old Lady Louise with 25 percent (607 people) while Princess Beatrice came in closely behind with 24 percent (567 people) supporting her.
James, Earl of Wessex, Peter Phillips and Princess Eugenie each received three percent of the vote with 82, 76 and 61 people backing them respectively. A further 61 people answered “other” and 113 people said they did not know.

Dozens of comments were left below the accompanying article as readers discussed their thoughts on expanding the number of working royals.
Username KyCountryGirl80 said: “Zara and Mike [Tindall] would be great additions as would Peter for right now. Then Louise and James when they are finished with school. That would be plenty of working royals until the Wales children are grown.”
Similarly, username Username Kiran G said: “I think Lady Louise and James, Earl of Wessex would be a great addition to working royals but of course, after they are done with their education.”
Username alicraig, added: “Zara, Beatrice and Eugenie would be great ambassadors. They do a lot unofficially.”

Another, username Goldielover, remarked: “Over the past few years they have gone from sixteen working royals down to eleven. Out of the eleven left, seven of them are over the age of seventy. That’s not sustainable for too much longer. They need some youth. William is the youngest at 41, and it will be quite a few years before his children are old enough to help out.
“Beatrice would be a logical choice, although perhaps not full-time due to family commitments. I suspect the late Queen saw her as a bit of a backup, as she tended to call on her a bit more than she did her younger sister Eugenie to help out at garden parties etc. Peter Phillips possibly too. Zara is popular, but still very busy with her own career. Lady Louise possibly at some point, but she’s not ready yet.”
Yet others thought that the King should not increase the number of working royals and stick to having a slimmed-down monarchy. Username hilz01 said: “There are more than enough working royals. No more!”
And username thomas1419 wrotE: “Keep it exclusive, and cut the number of engagements. Who would turn out to see the York sisters or Zara Tindall, lots of people don’t even know who she is.
“Keep the Royal Family small until George, Charlotte and Louie are older and may want to take up some duties. Louise may use her Princess title when she is older and take up some duties and charities.”
