King ‘trying to distance himself’ from Harry and Meghan, expert says
King Charles and Camilla wave to crowds from balcony in Hamburg
King Charles is seeking to avoid having his Coronation overshadowed by distancing himself from members of the Royal Family “unpopular” with the public, a PR expert suggested. Only 15 working members of the family are believed to have been offered a spot on Buckingham Palace’s balcony on the special day. But Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, while invited to the ceremony, have reportedly not been asked to step out in front of the crowd with His Majesty and Queen Camilla.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, PR expert Edward Coram James suggested the King’s decision is part of a three-pronged strategy aimed at protecting the institution’s public image.
Coram James said: “Essentially, the King is trying to distance himself from anyone and anything that might be seen as unpopular in the public imagination.
“By taking the two relatively unprecedented steps of limiting the number of royals to those that are working, and by excluding the majority of the British aristocracy from the coronation altogether, the King is attempting to do a number of things.

“First, show that they are financially astute. At a time of a cost-of-living crisis, and after the death of the Queen and the Sussex scandal, the King does not wish for the Royal Family to be seen as spending public funds unnecessarily.
“He has therefore opted for a slimmed-down Coronation, with far fewer attendees and less pomp. This affects everything, from excluding the nobility from the ceremony to excluding non-working royals from the balcony.”
The King has long been tipped to cut down on costs, with experts suggesting he could seek to turn more residences into museums open to the public to increase revenue.
He has also reportedly advised members of the family they would need to rein in spending as he seeks to curb how much taxpayers’ money is used to prop up the institution.

The GoUp founder continued: “Secondly, creating space between the Royals and the aristocracy. For over a thousand years, the Royal Family and the British nobility have been inextricably linked.
It is a deal that stretches back centuries wherein they are mutually supportive institutions. Now that the aristocracy has become less popular in the media and the public consciousness, and with the House of Lords becoming less hereditary, and open to potential abolition, the Royal Family is trying to distance themselves from it.”
Coram James added: “Thirdly, creating a protocol excuse for not allowing the controversial royals on the balcony.
“By saying ‘we only allow working Royals on the balcony’, what they are really saying is ‘we are not allowing Harry, Meghan and Andrew onto the balcony’.

“It is a very convenient excuse that, although transparent, also appears mature and considered.”
Harry and Meghan confirmed last month they had received an invite to the Coronation due to take place on May 6.
But a spokesman for the couple said they would not confirm quite yet whether they would attend.
With less than a month to go before the ceremony, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to say if they will be making their way to the UK for the King’s Coronation in the coming weeks.
