King offered glimpse into plans for Royal Family as an 18-year-old

Jonathan Dimbleby says Charles will be the perfect King

King Charles has been praised after a video emerged of the monarch saying the royals are more “family rather than a firm”.

Charles has long been reported to want to slim down the monarchy and modernise it to reduce the burden the family have on taxpayers. The plan would see only the King, Queen Consort, his direct heirs and senior members working on behalf of the Crown.

New footage released ahead of the Coronation offered a glimpse into His Majesty’s approach to monarchy, highlighting the importance of “family” for the future.

And as an 18-year-old, Charles was filmed saying: “I like to think of it more as a family rather than a firm.

“My family are very special people, and in that sense, I’m only beginning to see my parents and family as other people, do you know what I mean?”

Broadcaster Esther Krakue was then asked on Sky News Australia whether she believed Charles still held those views, to which she said: “You can certainly see reflections of that sentiment in his day-to-day life.

“The fact that he even wanted Prince Harry at his Coronation ceremony shows that he really does see his family as something to be cherished and he’s really trying to treat more as a family than a firm, even though it is effectively both and he is both leader of his family and the firm.

“Clearly Prince Harry has different views on that, and the extent to which he thinks family should take precedence over the firm, even the extent to which both of them relate to each other.

“But it’s clear that with King Charles’ very unique upbringing, knowing that he was always destined to be the monarch, it’s quite heartwarming to know he saw his family as more of a family.”

As King, Charles has been tipped to reduce the roles of Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, 74 and 76, as well as the Duke of Kent and his sister Princess Alexandra, 87 and 86, as he switches focus to younger members of the family.

The King has also already scaled down the Coronation with a shorter ceremony and 2,000 guests, while Queen Elizabeth had more than 8,000 in attendance.

A royal source told the Mirror of Charles’ plans: “The King is acutely aware of the cost of living crisis and just how many people are struggling.

“He wants to put the family’s work to focus on the most marginalised in society and those who are working hard every day to help those less fortunate.”

In yet more signs Charles has modernised the royals, he overhauled five traditions for his Coronation.

For the first time, female clergy will play a prominent role in the ceremony with three women bishops and multi-faith leaders included.

The ceremony will also be the first to incorporate all four languages spoken in Britain, with a hymn set to be sung in Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic.

All other faiths will be represented in the Christian service will leaders having an active role for the first time.

Charles will also become the first Monarch to read a prayer aloud during the ceremony. And Camilla will be anointed in full public view for the first time.
