King grants permission for Le Touquet airport to be renamed after late Queen
Queen Elizabeth II: Charles, Anne and Edward pay tribute
King Charles has granted permission for the airport in the French town of Le Touquet to be renamed after his late mother Queen Elizabeth.
Daniel Fasquelle, mayor of the town, which was once a favourite destination of British royalty and society, announced yesterday that Buckingham Palace had acceded to his council’s request.
Royal sources said that it was more a case of the King not voicing any opposition to the move rather than overtly supporting it, as the airport will now be known as Elizabeth II Le Touquet -Paris-Plage International Airport.
The authorities in Le Touquet contacted Buckingham Palace six days after the Queen died on September 8 to seek permission for the name change, in order to commemorate her and her visit to the town in the 1930s.
When she was still Princess Elizabeth, the Queen came to visit her uncle Edward VIII – who was then Prince of Wales – to go sand yachting and horse riding.

Mr Fasquelle described the council’s decision as “a homage to a great Queen and her uncle, a lover of France, and recognition for the most British of French airports”.
He said: “With the agreement of King Charles now given, all that remains is to fix a date for the opening ceremony.
“In the years to come, the Elizabeth II Le Touquet -Paris-Plage International Airport is destined to strengthen a bit more the link between Le Touquet and Great Britain.”

The King and Queen Camilla are due to travel to France for an official visit on September 20, which had to be rescheduled after it was postponed in March due to protests in the country.
It had been reported that before his trip to France Charles was planning to meet his estranged son Prince Harry in London, as Harry travels back from the Invictus Games in Germany.
However royal sources have dismissed these reports that they will meet in person, even though the King is open to a reconciliation in the future.
Prince William however is not interested at all in talking with his brother, according to insiders, as he is still hurt by claims Harry made against him in his memoir Spare.
Speaking to the Daily Beast, a friend of William’s said: “He feels utterly betrayed by what Harry wrote about him in the book and said about him on Netflix.
“They were very close growing up so it has been very painful for William. But ultimately what can he do?”
