King Charles to visit Canada next year in first visit to British realm as King

King Charles will be visiting Canada in spring 2024, marking his first visit to a British realm since his Coronation last May at Westminster Abbey.

The King and Queen Camilla have faced some backlash for taking so long to travel to the Commonwealth as monarchs, as the royals prepare to face growing republican sentiment in the country.

Charles and Camilla will travel together around Canada next May, with their visit expected to last for a week, as Foreign Office officials have been working closely with royal aides to ensure the royals face as little opposition as possible.

Inside sources have revealed to the Daily Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers that preliminary discussions have “raised concerns” about the kind of reception the King and Queen will receive.

They added that those responsible for organising the trip are “acutely aware” that the tour will be a “huge test of popularity” for Charles as he visits the British realm for the first time as monarch.

Polling carried out by CBC, the Canadian national broadcaster, before the Coronation show that 60 percent of the population are not in favour of the King being recognised as the monarch in Canada.

Data from the Angus Reid Institute also claimed just 28 percent say they have a favourable view of Charles, in comparison to 48 percent who said they do not.

In September this year, one year after Charles ascended to the throne, the Leger survey showed that 63 percent of Canadians believe the country should “rethink ties to King Charles III”.

Ever since the death of Queen Elizabeth there has been debate across the Commonwealth as to whether those who still have the British monarch as their head of state should continue as such.
