King Charles to revive tradition at this weekend’s Trooping the Colour

Trooping the Colour takes place annually and it is the first time it’s taken place since the death of Queen Elizabeth last September.

Her Majesty had not ridden at the historic event for almost 40 years – the last occasion was back in 1986.

Queen Elizabeth rode the same horse, Burmese, who was given to her by the Mounties at the ceremony for 18 consecutive Troopings the Colour.

Six blank gunshots were fired as she rode down the Mall back in 1981 and Burmese, although startled, was brought under control by the experienced horsewoman.

In following years after his retirement, The Queen rode in a carriage as he’d been her favourite horse.

Her oldest son will ride Noble, a black horse, which was also a gift from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Charles took the salute last year on behalf of his mother while she watched from Buckingham Palace.

On Saturday, he will be joined by Queen Camilla and other senior royals.

The Life Guards and the Blues and Royals will be the Sovereign’s Escort.

A march past and fly past will take place at Buckingham Palace.

Trooping the Colour marks the official birthday of the sovereign for more than 260 years.

During rehearsals last Saturday, several soldiers fainted in the heat while carrying out practice runs. Prince William who was reviewing the troops later tweeted a message of support and thanks to the soldiers.
