King Charles prepares for emotional visit to Balmoral with new royal chapter

Queen Elizabeth II wanted guests to ‘relax’ at Balmoral says May

This August will see the Royal Family travel to Scotland for their annual summer holiday to Balmoral, as has been a royal tradition for many years.

It will naturally be an especially poignant occasion for the Firm as it is the place where Queen Elizabeth passed away on September 8 last year, able to enjoy her final days in her favourite place.

Her Majesty and Prince Philip were at their most informal and relaxed at the castle, as they roamed the grounds and hosted BBQs together, with Philip even dubbed “master of the girll” by his family.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will this year be basing themselves at Birkhall, their own property on the Scottish estate, only using Balmoral to receive official guests.

The castle will not be empty as various other members of the family will be staying there over the course of the next couple of months, however it is the first time since the 19th century that a monarch will not be in residence at Balmoral.

Most of the royals are expected to make an appearance at Balmoral at some point, apart from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, whose “open invitation” has once again not been accepted.

The relationship between Harry his father, and his brother Prince William has still not been repaired since the damaging claims he made about the family in his memoir Spare.

But the Sussexes are now said to be focusing on their future, rather than continuing to talk about their past with the royals and the experiences they had.

A source told the Daily Mail’s Rebecca English about the family feud: “If true, that can only be a good thing and may offer a sliver of hope that at some point in the future personal relationships can be rebuilt.

“It’s been a very visibly challenging year when it comes to the Sussexes.”

Another source said there seems to be no chance of a reconciliation between William and Harry any time soon, explaining: “You can read the room on that as to where things are [between them].

“It’s sad, but it is what is. This is a family as well as an institution.”

William will be taking his wife Princess Kate and their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis up to Balmoral for a summer break.

Others expected to join them are the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and their teenage children, Louise and James; Princess Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, along with her son Peter Phillips and daughter Zara Tindall, both with their young families; and Charles’s cousin, Lady Sarah Chatto.

Prince Andrew will also be there alongside his daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie and their respective husbands and children.
