King Charles more vulnerable to criticism than his ‘bulletproof’ mother – claim
King Charles cannot deflect criticism of the monarchy like his “bulletproof” mother could, warns one royal author.
It comes more than a year after Britain’s longest-reigning monarch was laid to rest.
The nation immediately went into mourning following the Queen Elizabeth’s passing at 96.
She endeared herself to Britons through 70 years of public duties, sprinkling a bit of royal stardust on communities across the UK.
The Queen’s death marked the end of an era but the start of a new one as her son, the then Prince Charles, ascended to the throne.
Unfortunately, much of the monarchy’s magic and mystique died along his mother, claims royal author Clive Irving.

He explained: “We’re beginning to realise what the absence of the Queen means to the way that the public responds to the idea of the monarchy.
“Because as long as she was alive, she was bulletproof. There was very little criticism of her.”
Irving continued: “There was very little criticism of what lay behind the serenity that she conveyed.
“Even though we’re dealing with one of the most dysfunctional families in the world, publicly dysfunctional families in the world, somehow she seemed to provide that sense of gravity and grace that somehow deflected a lot of the attention that’s now being given to it.”
That veil has been lifted now King Charles is in charge, the royal author added.
Other royal authors share this sentiment. In a previous interview with Express US, Tom Bower, author of Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors, claimed the Queen set the bar impossibly high for Charles.
He said: “Charles’ popularity clearly is nothing like his mother’s.”
But, the royal author went on, the “monarchy is still popular”, adding that it now falls on Prince William and his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, to “keep the whole flame going”.
Indeed, rumour has it Charles has already made preparations for his abdication.
