King Charles reportedly fears the release of Netflix’s new season of The Crown over the potential portrayal of his dramatic break-up with Diana, the royal commentator claimed. Only a month after Charles rose to the throne, his private love story and subsequent divorce with the then-Princess of Wales could be aired on the mainstream platform. That prospect haunts the King who, for 20 years, has tried to distance himself from his chaotic divorce, Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent Katie Nicholl suggested.

Ms Nicholl said the upcoming season will focus on the Queen’s annus horribilis but also on the King’s marriage breakdown.

Ms Nicholl said: “And the spotlight is very much going to be on that.

“And one of the things that I was told by a former courtier who worked for the Prince of Wales as he then was for about 20 years was that Charles always feared that the spectre of Diana – and remember it’s been 25 years since her death – would always hang over his reign.”

Ms Nicholl said: “And I think those were legitimate concerns because her legacy continues. She has sort of been frozen in time.

“And we are going to be watching those very difficult years played out all over again.

“And for Charles, who obviously wants to leave the past behind, [he] doesn’t want that tabloid version of his past played out all over again.

“It’s happening right at the start of his reign. So, it is a problem.”

The royal correspondent also wondered if the King will put forward his own narrative on events.

Referring to her new book on Queen Elizabeth’s legacy and the future of the Crown, Ms Nicholl said: “I was able to dispel some of those myths about Charles.

“It was always Diana, the hands-on mother who’d make sure she was there for the boys when they were growing up.

“Actually, Charles was there a lot, too.”

Reports emerged over the weekend suggesting Buckingham Palace is “concerned” about the portrayal of the new King in the latest series of the drama series.

The new installment of The Crown will focus on the 1990s, which posed a serious challenged for the Royal Family due to the divorces of the three of the Queen’s children as well as the so-called War of the Waleses between Charles and Diana.

After a decade-long marriage, Diana and Charles separated in 1992 and formally divorced in 1996 upon Queen Elizabeth’s request.

Though the couple was portrayed as a fairy tale romance, Charles and Diana grew apart and each pursued relationships outside of their marriage.

Diana tragically died in a car accident in Paris with her partner Dodi al-Fayed, while Charles went on to marry his long-time partner Camilla Parker Bowles, the now-Queen Consort.
