King Charles’ fingers spotted by shocked Americans who ask, ‘What’s going on?’
King Charles has gone viral with Americans on social media after many questioned if there was cause for concern after seeing the Monarch’s fingers.
On Monday, US President Joe Biden met with King Charles for the first time since the monarch’s coronation earlier this year. President Biden arrived at Windsor Castle, located just outside London, and was greeted by an honour guard who played both “God Save the King” and “The Star Spangled Banner.”
At one point during the historic meeting, President Biden put his hand on the King’s back which has been described as a “wonderful symbol of warmth and affection” between both the UK and USA. Touching a monarch is not traditional in Britain, but one royal source spoke who with CNN explained that the President followed “the correct protocol” in meeting the monarch
However, Americans have quickly taken to both Twitter and Facebook to express their thoughts on the royal meeting, with some focusing entirely on King Charles’ fingers,
One confused person wrote: “Anyone know what’s going on with Charles’ fingers?” while another commentator asked: “Is King Charles okay? It looks like his fingers are really swollen.”
Some online users found humour in the situation, as someone wrote: “King Charles’ fingers look like they are going to crush Biden’s hand”, while someone else wrote: “I think King Charles’ fingers look like corndogs or sausages.”
King Charles has been pictured with swollen hands and feet on many occasions, especially after spending time on a flight or travelling in a country with warm weather. However, one doctor has explained that there may be a health reason related to King Charles’ swollen fingers.
Doctor Chun Tang, the Medical Director at Pall Mall Medical in Manchester, explained that there are “numerous reasons” someone may suffer from “sausage fingers.”
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Dr Tang explained: “Often puffy fingers are a symptom of water retention which can be caused by numerous health conditions. Sausage fingers are officially known as dactylitis.
“This condition arises due to inflammation and can be a result of arthritis, multiple bacterial infections, or even TB. Other possibilities include high salt levels, allergic reactions, medicinal side effects, injury and autoimmune diseases.”
Dr. Tang said that a blood test is often carried out to see if there is an underlying health issue for swollen fingers, and also added that treatment may be“determined” after the cause is discovered.
King Charles appears to have suffered from his fingers swelling throughout his life, as Queen Elizabeth commented on the royal’s “interesting pair of hands for a baby.”
In a letter to her former music teacher, Queen Elizabeth, wrote: “They are rather large, but with fine long fingers quite unlike mine and certainly unlike his father’s. It will be interesting to see what they become. I still find it hard to believe I have a baby of my own!”
However, King Charles has been able to see the humour in people noticing his fingers and even joked about his own “sausage fingers” while on a royal tour of Australia in 2012.
The King also commented on his fingers in a letter to a friend shortly after the birth of Prince William. When describing his son, King Charles wrote: “I can’t tell you how excited and proud I am. He really does look surprisingly appetising and has sausage fingers just like mine.”
