Speaking on the latest episode of Palace Confidential, commentator Kate Mansey claimed the King and his youngest brother have not “always got on particularly well”, suggesting the  “big age gap” between the two contributed to a distant relationship. After noting the potential “snub” over the Duke of Edinburgh title, Ms Mansey suggested another reason for the King “distancing himself” from Prince Edward.

Ms Mansey told Palace Confidential that the two brothers are “quite different characters”.

The Mail on Sunday’s assistant editor added: “When Edward and [Princess] Anne went to go shooting with Andrew, King Charles’ advisors made it very very clear that while he was in Windsor, he wasn’t part of the shoot with the rest of the family.

“[He’s] very keen to distance himself from his brother Andrew.”

She added: “Edward and Anne being seen publicly going out to meet with Andrew and to talk to him about what is going on, that wasn’t taken very well.”

Ms Mansey said that “there needs to be that bridge, Edward’s always been that bridge between Andrew and Charles.

She added: “I think some compensation, in terms of the [Edinburgh] title, or just showing him a bit of love, might be wise.”

Diary editor Richard Eden added that Anne and Edward are “quite sympathetic” towards Andrew and “wouldn’t accept” not being able to see him.

Princess Anne, the late Queen’s only daughter, has often been dubbed the hardest working of the Royal Family.

Prince Edward 'very much' part of Charles' monarchy says host

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, who is known as the Countess of Wessex, have played a more active role within the monarchy, particularly in recent months.

Edward, 58, was promised by the Queen that following the death of his father, the late Duke of Edinburgh, he will be granted the Edinburgh title.

Due to Charles’ potential plans to slim down the monarchy, it has been reported that Charles could deny his youngest brother the title.

Two members of the Royal Family, Prince Andrew and Prince Harry, have stepped back from Royal Duties in the past few years.

Ms Mansey termed the denial as a “snub” and called Charles “quite mean” should he go ahead with the refusal.

However, royal commentator Victoria Arbiter noted Edward and Sophie have been selected to represent the King on several prominent engagements, suggesting the Edinburgh title is still on the line.

Ms Arbiter said: “In the last month alone, the King requested that Prince Edward be made a counsellor of state.

“Prince Edward has been chosen to represent the King at the Royal Variety Performance that’s coming up. It will be his first time at the show.”

She added: “Edward was selected to take the royal salute at the Veterans March Past.

“Sophie became the first member of the Royal Family to travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I would say Prince Edward and his wife Sophie are very much a part of the King’s future slimmed-down monarchy.”
