King Charles III has been defended after a hot mic caught him shouting “God, I hate this”. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died last Thursday at the age of 96 at her Balmoral estate in what is understood to have been among her favourite residences.
Immediately following Her Majesty’s massing, Charles became King and has since been officially proclaimed as such, delivered his first – and much-praised – speech as monarch and stood guard by the Queen’s coffin.
Almost all of this, as is now customary, has been captured in film, including moments the King would likely prefer had been kept off-record.
While in Northern Ireland, Charles III yesterday expressed his frustration at a leaky pen.
After signing the visitors’ book at Hillsborough Castle, he said: “Oh God I hate this.
“I can’t bear this bloody thing! [It’s] what they do every stinking time.”
His wife, Camilla, Queen Consort, added: “Oh look it’s going everywhere.”
Some, primarily on social media, have argued this is revealing of a poor nature – that the King was acting in an ignoble manner.
But others have defended the King, insisting this was nothing short of the result of a long and stressful week following a tragic loss.

Tory Councillor Lucy Trimnell wrote in a post on Twitter: “His schedule since his mother’s death has been absolutely gruelling and he must be emotionally and physically exhausted.
“I was thinking earlier that all of them probably just want to cry into a cup of tea.”
Illustrator Chris Mould added: “If this is a thing I wish I’d had the camera running that time I took a lump hammer to a printer that wasn’t working.”

Guido Fawkes blog Senior Reporter Christian Calgie also wrote: “If I lost my mum in full glare of the global media and had to spend every waking hour meeting hundred of people and delivering countless emotional speeches, I’d be amazed if my only slip up was getting angry at a broken pen.”
Other users saw it best to treat the matter with levity, forgiving Charles this minor slip.
Energy market analyst Tom Peck joked: “Still two months til the World Cup and we’re already singing the national anthem and struggling with pens.”
Salena Moffat added: “He is very much his father’s son.
“[He] must be so exhausted, trying to do all the… necessities while mourning deeply.”
Even singer Ellie Goulding chimed in, commenting: “We’ve all been there.”
