Killer accused of murdering two women in 1980s ‘had sex with dead bodies'

A ‘depraved’ killer who sexually molested his victims also abused female corpses at mortuaries of hospitals he worked at, a court heard.

David Fuller is accused of murdering Wendy Knell, 25, and Caroline Pierce, 20, in separate attacks in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, in 1987.

Ms Knell was found strangled in her bedsit in June and Ms Pierce was abducted outside her flat in November — a month before her naked body was discovered in a dyke 40 miles away on Romney Marsh.

DNA evidence from both bodies links Fuller, 67, to the deaths.

There were reports of a ‘prowler’ outside their bedsits before they were killed, Maidstone crown court heard.

Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson QC said Fuller sexually assaulted the women after they had died.

Evidence found at his home showed ‘repellent’ images taken at Kent and Sussex Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital, where Fuller worked as an electrician, he said.

Mr Atkinson told the court Fuller had a ‘particular interest’ in the sexual assault of dead women.

He added: ‘His desire for sexual gratification through the observation and identification of vulnerable women, gaining control of them, and then indulging his depraved sexual predilections, all provides the explanation in relation to their murder.’

Fuller, of Heathfield in East Sussex, admits killing the women but denies murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The trial continues.
