A newborn baby was found abandoned at the entrance of a hospital in Kent on Friday morning.

According to a statement from Kent Police, staff at Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford discovered the child near the entrance at 3.15am.

The infant is said to be safe and unharmed.

A search is currently under way for the mother amid worries for her safety and wellbeing.

Detective Superintendent Gavin Moss said: “It is really important that we locate the mother as we need to ensure she is safe and receives any support she may need”.

“I would like to stress that this is about ensuring the mother’s wellbeing, there is nothing to fear in coming forward. I would urge her to call us on 999.”
