Ken Livingstone insisted that a continual cycle of lockdowns is the route Britain should embark on to ward off the spread of the new variant. The former Mayor of London, who served the British capital between 2000 and 2008, argued that the best thing to do to control the Omicron strain is to stay at home and avoid getting in touch with people from other households. There is growing concern among people in Britain that the UK could return to a state of lockdown after the turn of the year following ten months of normality as more and more Omicron cases are being detected in the UK.
But Mr Livingstone did little to steady people’s nerves as he claimed a fourth lockdown is the best that could happen to block the new disease which he described as not too risky.
When asked by GB News presenter Dan Wootton if he would keep the country in a “perpetual cycle of lockdowns”, London’s former Mayor stressed that regular stints of lockdowns would “absolutely” do the trick.
He said: “I mean, literally I went and got my first jab back in January.
“And I got my booster dose about two months ago, I’ve been right at the front of this.

“When I left school, I spent eight years working in a cancer unit, so all my thinking was defined by being in the NHS.
“I know the risks of this virus.
“We’re lucky it will not be too bad.”
Mr Livingstone then spoke candidly about the mistakes he feels the UK made back in early 2020, suggesting that a lockdown should have been implemented much earlier to prevent the devastating outbreak that claimed nearly 150,000 people on our shores.

But he argued that the country should learn from its mistakes to prevent lightning from striking twice.
He said: “We should have been in lockdown months before we did. Now we should stay in lockdown until we get control of the virus.”
Mr Wootton was upfront in his assessment of Mr Livingstone’s desired approach and tested his resolve.
The presenter listed the flipsides of a new state of isolation, pointing out how bad it would affect people’s finances.

He said: “It’s right to say that [a new lockdown] is damaging for the economy.
“But you could have hundreds of thousands of people dying. There is no evidence to suggest we’re gonna have hundreds of thousands of people dying from Covid.
“If we take the Ken Livingstone approach of perpetual lockdowns we would have hundreds of thousands of people dying as a result of the poverty caused by lockdown.”
But Mr Livingstone dismissed Mr Wootton’s theory and highlighted that it’s down to the government to come to people’s rescue in case of need and offer them a helping hand.
He said: “The numbers have died already. The numbers of people being infected. No one needs to die because of poverty because the government needs to provide support.”
One million booster jabs a day are being rolled out to people in the UK in a bid to keep people safe and reduce the likelihood of another lockdown.
