On Wednesday night, the Duchess of Cambridge and The Royal Foundation hosted a Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey. The event, named Together at Christmas, was orchestrated to pay tribute to the work of individuals and organisations across the UK who supported their communities through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Members of the Royal Family appeared in force to support the Duchess at the event, including Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex and Zara and Mike Tindall.

Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, and Beatrice’s sister Princess Eugenie also attended the celebratory event.

Kate’s parents Catherine and Michael Middleton as well as her younger sister Pippa, brother James and his wife Alizee also made an appearance.

Around 1,200 unsung Covid heroes gathered at the Abbey to watch a variety of performances from stars including Leona Lewis and Ellie Goulding.

There were also readings from the Duke of Cambridge, British Paralympian and junior doctor Kim Daybell and presenter Kate Garraway.

The Good Morning Britain presenter told Hello! how “honoured” she was to be able to attend and give a reading at the service.

Kate said: “The Duchess had taken wonderful care and personally chosen all the readings, which had such a thoughtful theme of love and kindness.”

During the event, the Duchess of Cambridge asked after Kate’s ailing husband Derek who requires round-the-clock care at home after contracting coronavirus in 2020.

Kate told Hello!: “Both she and Prince William were kind enough to ask after Derek and the children and as I was also lucky to be able to bring my [son] William with me, so he got the chance to see them too.”

Derek, 54, was admitted to hospital last March after contracting Covid.

He then spent considerable time in intensive care, before leaving hospital one year later.

He now requires round-the-clock care at home.

In the programme booklet for the service, Kate reflected on the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

She added: “We have lost loved ones, seen our frontline workers placed under immeasurable pressure, and we have experienced heart-wrenching isolation from those we hold most dear.

“Alongside this, we have seen how communities have come together to support those most in need.

“And through our separation from others, we have been reminded just how powerful human connection is to us all.”

She also commented on how the pandemic emphasised the “importance of simply being together”.

For the event, the Duchess wore a red Catherine Walker dress with matching Gianvito Rossi heels.

She also wore sapphire and diamond earrings which initially belonged to the Queen Mother.

The concert will form part of a programme entitled Royal Carols: Together At Christmas, which airs Christmas Eve at 7.30pm on ITV.
