The Duchess of Cambridge’s “warmth” towards Prince Charles was “noticed” during Prince Philip’s funeral. The two royals, along with a select number of other close family members, attended a socially distanced ceremony for the late Duke of Edinburgh in mid-April. Channel 5 documentary, ‘Kate: Our Queen in Waiting’, explored how Kate interacted with her grieving father-in-law.

Narrator David Riley told viewers: “It wasn’t just Kate’s appearance that drew attention that day.

“It was also the supportive role that she seemed to assume.”

Filmmaker and broadcaster Bidisha explained: “I noticed something watching the footage of Prince Philip’s funeral.

“It was how warm Kate Middleton was to Prince Charles.”

She added: “It was as if she was saying, ‘It’s okay to show we’re a family in the same way that all the other people in the world are families’.”

This is not the first time the Duchess’ relationship with her father-in-law has been highlighted.

Reports early in the year claimed she was instrumental in building bridges between Prince William and Prince Charles.

Daily Mirror Royal Editor Russell Myers discussed what the royal had done on ITV’s Lorraine show.

He told viewers: “Charles is a workaholic at the best of times. I think Kate has brought him closer with the family.

“She’s got him to spend more time with the grandkids and to chill out a little bit.

“Charles and William are very very different people, but their relationship as of late has been really strong.”

Mr Myers continued: “The actual person that’s brought them together is Kate.

“She was the one who brought them together for the big 70th birthday photograph.

“They all looked like a happy family, all smiling.”

In honour of Charles’ milestone birthday in 2018, a number of family portraits, taken in the Clarence House gardens, were released.

They featured Charles, Camilla, Kate, William, the Cambridge children and Meghan and Harry.
