The unexpected visit by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge came on the day Queen Elizabeth II turned 95 – April 21. The monarch’s birthday was for obvious reasons a low key event and the traditional 41-gun and 21-gun salutes in Hyde Park and the Tower of London were cancelled for a second year running. However, Kate still found a charming way to acknowledge the Queen’s birthday.

The Duchess decided to don a pair of diamond and pearl earrings that were first worn by the Queen during her Silver Jubilee in 1977.

At the time, the Queen paired them with her pink Hardy Amies outfit and famous Simone Mirman flower hat.

The British monarch no longer wears the earrings in public and loans them out to Royal Family members.

The Countess of Wessex appeared to be sporting the earrings at the wedding of Luxembourg’s Hereditary Grand Duke in 2012.

The Duchess of Cambridge was first spotted wearing the same jewellery items during a visit to Canada in 2016.

When she was again photographed wearing them on a visit to the Netherlands, Buckingham Palace officially confirmed that the Queen had loaned her the earrings.

Kate and William’s visit on Wednesday had a poignant significance attached to it.

Prince Philip served as Air Commodore-in-Chief of the Air Training Corps for 63 years until 2015.

In line with the traditional mourning period for the Royal Family, the Duke and Duchess were dressed in black.

Kate opted for a sleek black coat from the designer Dolce & Gabbana, that retails at approximately £2,349.

The calf-length ebony coat offers a sophisticated shape, with shoulder pads and a synched waist.

It was complete with eye-catching gold buttons down the centre.
