Kate’s brother James Middleton reveals divide with royals ‘I lead a separate life’
James, 32, said he leads a very different life to his fellow Middleton siblings and royal in-laws. In a new interview with Tatler, he said: “I lead a separate life to them. If there’s interest in me, great. If there’s interest in me because of them, that’s different.”
James was 23 when Kate married Prince William, who is second in line to the throne.
He also spoke out about the pressure he has faced on his various businesses due to the attention which followed after Kate married into royalty.
James said: “Suddenly, and very publicly, I was being judged about whether I was a success or a failure.
“That does put pressure on you. Because in my mind I’m doing this irrespective of my family and events that have happened.”
The youngest Middleton sibling now runs marshmallow company Boomf, after closing his cake business.
The businessman added: “For the rest of my life I’ll be coming up with ideas.
“Some of them will work, some of them won’t, but that’s me, that’s what I do.”
Earlier this year, James was widely praised for speaking out about his battle with depression.
He told Tatler that the illness was “crippling”.
James said: “It’s what keeps you in bed, while anxiety makes you feel guilty for being there.
“I thought ‘What do I have to be depressed about?’ I’ve been so lucky with my upbringing, I had all the things I wanted.
“It’s not that I wanted more, but there was something that wasn’t always there… And the more I ignored it, the more it was taking over.”
But James is in a good place now after seeking help.
He added: “I am happy. I feel like James Middleton again. I feel like I was when I was 13, excited about life. I feel like myself again and I couldn’t ask for more.”
