James Middleton said he was left with “tears in my eyes” after being forced to take a step back from his work to look after his personal mental health. In a heartbreaking Instagram update, the Duchess of Cambridge’s brother admitted he was pushed into investing his efforts on a new activity while undergoing therapy. James said shortly after his diagnosis of clinical depression he had “zero confidence” in himself but was inspired to channel his love for dogs into a new venture.

The caption to James’ latest Instagram post read: “I remember sitting in the therapist’s chair with Ella by my side having taken a leave of absence from my company Boomf to focus on my clinical depression, with tears in my eyes I said ‘what am I going to do next?’

“I had zero confidence & I felt like a complete failure – the therapist said, ‘do something you love – you love your dogs and have so much confidence around them so why not try and include them in your next venture’ and so the journey of Ella & Co begins.”

James announced the launch of a new happiness and wellness company for dogs in an inspiring video co-starring his beloved black cocker spaniel Ella.

He continued: “I am extremely proud to be launching @ella.co – this is not just a business, this is my heart & soul, I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you.

“Ella has been my inspiration & I want to do everything I can to give back to her and the rest of my wonderful dogs for everything they have done for me over the years.”

James Middleton last year opened up about living with clinical depression, speaking about how “crippling” the experience had been before starting therapy.

He said: “The depression was crippling. It’s what keeps you in bed, while anxiety makes you feel guilty for being there.

“I thought ‘What do I have to be depressed about?’ I’ve been so lucky with my upbringing, I had all the things I wanted. It’s not that I wanted more, but there was something that wasn’t always there… And the more I ignored it, the more it was taking over.”
