Kate and Prince William spent the first years of their marriage relatively far from the public eye. And at the time there was a sense of urgency among the Cambridges about the need to spend time together as a young family, according to a close friend.

They told The Sunday Times magazine: “It was really clear they needed to establish a solid family life, because there was always a sense that it wouldn’t last for ever.

“That time was hugely important, because their working life has become more pressured the further away from that time they’ve got.”

Kate and Prince William didn’t immediately become full-time working royals after their marriage.

Until 2015, the Duke worked as an RAF Search & Rescue team member based in Anglesey.

The young family later moved to Norfolk, where William worked for two years as a helicopter pilot for East Anglia Air Ambulance.

The Duke started fully dedicating himself to royal duties in the summer of 2017, just a few weeks before Prince Philip’s retirement from public duties.

Kate eased into royal life by taking on patronages she carefully chose and laying the ground for her work, focusing on areas of interest including mental health, early years and the arts.

Prince William and Kate’s roles are to change over the next years.

The Duke and Duchess are set to become the next Prince and Princess of Wales at the end of the Queen’s reign.

And, after Prince Charles, William will become King, which will see the Duchess step into the role of Queen Consort.

Despite being deeply aware of their future roles, the Cambridges continue to strive to maintain a balance between their public and family life.

They are known to be giving Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis a childhood as normal as possible.

Moreover, they try to be present in their lives by complementing, whenever possible, their children’s needs with their working schedules.

Both Kate and William take part in school runs and help their children with their studies.

They also reportedly take part in everyday activities with George, Charlotte and Louis – including, according to royal expert Katie Nicholl, going on spider hunts to support their daughter’s love for bugs and taking care of vegetable patches on their homes’ grounds.

In October 2019, the Cambridges were said to have scheduled their departure for the important tour to Pakistan to give them enough time to drop off Charlotte and George at Thomas’s Battersea school.

Despite their growing responsibilities, Kate and William still enjoy breaks with their family.

During the schools’ half term in October, they travelled with their children to Jordan – a country deeply loved by the Duchess as she spent a few years there as a baby.

In Jordan, the family of five sat down for a stunning picture, which was released in the run-up to the winter holidays as the Cambridges’ Christmas card.

Both Kate and William have yet to resume their work following the Christmas break.

They were last seen on Christmas Day leaving by car St Mary Magdalene Church.

Unlike Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince Charles, the Cambridges did not spend Christmas with the Queen at Windsor Castle.

Rather, they stayed at Anmer Hall in Norfolk, joined by a few members of the Middleton clan.

The Duke and Duchess are widely expected to resume their public duties this coming week, as the children are returning to the classroom.
