Kate, Princess of Wales, will be “paying the price” for the Royal Family being “stretched thin” by the “convulsive exit” of Meghan and Harry, and the ousting of Prince Andrew, a royal expert says. Princess Kate and her husband, the Prince of Wales, will be most likely be forced to take on the majority of tours and royal engagements, she predicts.
The Royal Family has gone through “tumult and change” in recent years. In February 2021, Meghan and Harry’s departure from royal duties was confirmed and so was Harry’s loss of military titles.
And early this year, Prince Andrew was made to hand his own royal patronages and military titles to The Queen after accusations from Virginia Giuffre which he has repeatedly and vehemently denied.
The result of these departures from The Firm is that “the remaining HRHs (Royal Highnesses) are going to be stretched ever thinner”, explains the Royal columnist Daniela Elser in the New Zealand Herald.
Since the Prince and Princess of Wales of Wales are the only working Royal couple under 50, their workload – the tours and royal engagements – is likely to increase, according to Elser.
She said: “The loss of the Sussexes from the royal fold dealt the Royal Family not only a serious reputational blow but a hands-on one too.
“The convulsive exit of two star players along with accusations of racism and of an institution focused on self-preservation no matter the individual cost.
“And there is one person in particular who will end up paying the price for much of this tumult and change: Kate, the now Princess of Wales,” she added.
Around this time three years ago — the last time the Windsors were in Sandringham for Christmas — the number of family members was noticeably higher with Harry and Meghan on the scene.
But unknown to others, behind the scenes, the two wanted out. By late 2019, they decided they could not handle the “emotional toll”.
In the Sussex’ new Netflix series they wrote: “The emotional toll that it was having on both of us, but especially my wife … How are we gonna change our relationship with the institution, but in a way that protects us and our mental health and our wellbeing as well?”
Talking about the Sussex’ departure, Elser added: “These lofty notions of protecting their kids and trying to shield them from the demands and scrutiny that come with their surname will at some point crash headlong into the reality of the monarchy’s dwindling pool of HRHs.”
One burden that Kate will have to take on is the upholding of the Royal brand, according to Elser.
The Royal Family’s brand has taken several hits in recent years with the controversy around Andrew and accusations of racism in Meghan Markle and Harry.
On top of the pressure caused the Sussex’ exit from The Firm, Elser believes William and Kate only have “about a decade” until King Charles and Queen Camilla leave behind their international tours.
When this happens, William and Kate will have to take on this heavy burden as well.
By this point, the older working royals – the Wessexes as well as Princess Anne – will be the only other remaining working members.
Yet, some insiders believe there could be a small chance that Prince Harry could return to royal duties in the future, although this is unlikely.
It was The Queen in February 2021 who commented that it was “not possible” for Meghan and Harry to “continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service” in the US.
Yet, insiders have suggested in the past that Harry and Meghan could be hoping Charles would invite them to return.
The royal author Tom Quinn told the To Di For Daily podcast in February: “That [allowing their return] was something that Queen Elizabeth absolutely said couldn’t happen, but I think Meghan and Harry are hoping that Charles, Harry’s father, after all, will be more of a modernizer and will say to them, ‘okay, if you want to be part-time royals, that’s fine’.”
The King is yet to make a statement about the impossibility of the Sussex’ returning.
