Kate to face onslaught of public scrutiny amid huge change within Royal Family

Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge has long been training for her future role as Queen Consort to Prince William. But despite growing commitments to represent the Royal Family and widespread public support, the Duchess of Cambridge could face much scrutiny because of a new role she will take on after Prince Charles takes the throne. According to online magazine The Talko, Kate will have to fall in line with the Prince of Wales’ plans for monarchical reform, a move which could spark criticism against the Duchess.

The magazine reported: “Kate Middleton was heavily criticised when she first joined the Royal Family and might end up facing that scrutiny again when Prince Charles is King.

“In order to appeal to as many people as possible, members of the Royal Family try not to get political.

“The Queen is supposed to remain politically neutral but some people wonder if Prince Charles will change things.”

The magazine continued: “He’s been outspoken on certain topics like global warming and even Prince Harry believes it’s important to modernise the British monarchy.

“If Prince Charles decided to push the boundaries of tradition, Prince William and Kate will have to get on board and help keep the family current and relatable.”

But both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have already shown they are moving towards a wider role, speaking more frequently about causes they care about.

Kate and William have been praised through the coronavirus pandemic for their efforts to support older members of the Royal Family forced to isolate because of the virus.

The pair have appeared in a joint interview earlier this month to launch a short film they narrated to support the NHS’s efforts against COVID-19.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have long been outspoken advocates for better mental health discourse and support several charities focused on mental health debate.

The Queen has also entrusted the couple with an increasing number of charities she used to patron in the past few years.

In December 2019, Her Majesty passed on her patronage of Family Action to the Duchess of Cambridge after holding the role for over 65 years.

Kate had previously taken on roles as patron to the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) in Wimbledon and has been regularly attending the women’s finals since inheriting the role.

Passing on charities has been part of a process to ease the load of work the Queen has been carrying since becoming Queen in 1952.

Prince William replaced the Queen as patron of the Amateur Swimming Association. In 2013, the Duke of Cambridge also became president of Fields in Trust after Prince Philip retired following 64 years at the helm of the charity.

Despite the heavy workload Kate and William have been taking on in the past few years, they have also managed to carve out some time to spend with their three children.

Like millions of other British parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have also taken on homeschooling their two older children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, during the lockdown.

They also marked Prince Louis’s second birthday last month and will have a special phone call with the Queen to celebrate Charlotte’s 6th birthday on May 2.
