Prince William’s wife has faced criticism for failing to speak out about the claims that Meghan had made her cry in the days before the Sussexes’ May 2018 wedding. Meghan told Oprah that it was in fact Kate who reduced her to tears – turning the story on its head two-and-a-half years after it emerged. After the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s tell-all with Oprah aired on ITV on Monday, viewers have pointed the finger of blame at Kate, 39.
Many said the mother-of-three should have spoken out in late 2018 when the story broke to correct the false version.
One royal watcher accused Kate of standing by and allowing Meghan to “take the fall”.
They tweeted: “Always remember this: the Duchess of Cambridge allowed Meghan Markle to take the fall for something that she did!”
Another troll said Kate “didn’t clear that matter up – not even a bit”.
And yet a third said Kate had not only made Meghan cry but had “sat back” as millions of people read reports claiming she was the victim.
A fourth social media user said the Duchess of Cambridge “she sat by when she could have corrected the narrative”.
They also accused her of being “complicit” in the backlash Meghan faced after the initial story emerged.
The incident centred around the dresses for bridesmaids at Meghan and Harry’s wedding.
In November 2018 it was reported that in the run up to the nuptials in May, Meghan had reduced Kate to tears over her demands for the bridesmaids’ outfits.
Princess Charlotte was among the tots tasked with walking down the aisle as part of the bridal party.
But during her interview with Oprah, Meghan said Kate had been the one who upset her.
She said: “It wasn’t a confrontation and I actually think it’s… I don’t think it’s fair to her to get into the details of that because she apologised and I’ve forgiven her.”

Meghan said Prince William’s wife sent her flowers in a bid to make up.
But despite the former actress saying there was no bad blood between her and Kate, some royal fans used her comments as an opportunity to hit out at Kate.
One said: “The point is, the Duchess of Cambridge stayed silent at Meghan’s expense — if she couldn’t speak up because of the Royal Family then it still makes her and the Royal Family look bad.”
On Thursday Kate stepped out in a baby pink blouse and knee-length coat for her first royal engagement since Meghan and Harry’s bombshell interview.
William, 38, was by her side for a visit to a school in Stratford, east London, where they met staff and pupils easing back into the rhythm of classroom learning following months of absence due to the nationwide lockdown.
Asked by a reporter if he had spoken to his brother since the interview, William said he had not but planned to do so.
And pressed on whether his family was racist, the duke slapped down the allegation.
He said: “We are very much not a racist family.”
Harry and Meghan accused an unnamed royal of making racist comments about their son Archie’s skin colour before he was born.
While the pair both refused to say who had spoken in such a manner, Harry told Oprah it was neither the Queen nor Prince Philip.
