Paolo Roversi said Kate threw in a “pinch of rock ‘n’ roll”, adding that she looked “almost like a ballet dancer” in a romantic organza gown. The fashion snapper couldn’t resist persuading her to twirl across the floor for the set of so-far unreleased pictures.

He told an Italian newspaper: “In the end I wanted to take some moving pictures, so with that wonderful wide skirt I made her dance in front of my lens, a sort of accelerated waltz mixed with a pinch of rock ‘n’ roll.”

Roversi, 74, said the images are not being released for now, but fans of the Duchess ‑ 40 yesterday ‑ begged him online to put them on display. One wrote: “Now this is a photo I’d love to see!”

The shoot took place at London’s Kew Gardens last November, producing around 70 images. The Duchess, her husband Prince William and their three children are understood to have been involved in selecting the three that were released at the weekend.

Roversi told Corriere della Sera newspaper that Kate “is a friendly welcoming woman who puts people at ease and respects everyone’s work. She exudes joy of life. Open, generous, bright, I think she can bring a lot of hope.”

He said the Duchess wore little make-up to be “as pure and as contemporary as possible”.

Kate let Sarah Burton ‑ boss of fashion house Alexander McQueen and her wedding gown designer ‑ choose her dresses. In a red off-the-shoulder number, with earrings on loan from the Queen, she beams and puts her hands casually in the pockets while two black and white pictures show her in more ethereal style, wearing earrings that belonged to Princess Diana.

The photos will be added to the permanent collection at the National Portrait Gallery.

She celebrated her 40th privately at Anmer Hall, the Cambridges’ Norfolk home, after bigger plans were sidelined by the pandemic.

The Duchess thanked her many well-wishers on Twitter, signing herself C for Catherine: “Thank you for all of your very kind birthday wishes, and to Paolo and the National Portrait Gallery for these three special portraits. C.”

The Queen and other Royals also sent best wishes online alongside photos of events with Kate.
