The Duchess of Cambridge’s role during Prince Philip’s funeral has been highlighted by royal commentators. Kate’s appearance featured significant additions, including jewels “permanently lent” to her from the Queen. Channel 5 documentary, ‘Kate: Our Queen in Waiting’, discussed the impact the Duchess of Cambridge had on the somber day.

Daily Mirror Royal Editor Russell Myers told viewers: “There was certainly a lot made of the iconic images that we saw.

“Kate with her black veil, the black mask, staring intently into the camera.”

Royal author Tom Quinn said: “That incredibly elegant Catherine Walker dress coat with the bow on the shoulder.

“The net in the hair, the incredibly glossy hair.”

Mail on Sunday Royal Editor Emily Andrews explained: “She’s wearing a pair of pearl and diamond earrings.

“They had actually been permanently lent to her by the Queen.

“Peals and diamonds are the traditional jewellery you wear for mourning.”

Mr Quinn added: “She has a kind of poise, almost a stillness.”

He continued: “So I think all the focus, inevitably, without her really trying, was on her.

“She almost looked more regal than the rest of the Royal Family.

“What a paradox that is, given that she wasn’t born into it.”

The specific jewels the Duchess wore were the Bahrain Pearl and Diamond Drop Earrings.

They have special sentimental significance.

They were made from stones that were a wedding gift to Elizabeth and Philip in 1947.

Kate previously wore the necklace for a private dinner at Windsor Castle in 2017 celebrating the Queen and Prince Philip’s 70th wedding anniversary.

Although other pieces of her outfit were previously worn, the Catherine Walker coat was new.
