This Christmas, much like last year, was a very different one for the Royal Family. Last year’s festive celebrations were cancelled with much of the country under tight coronavirus restrictions. This year’s get-together was also scrapped at the last minute, with the Queen instead spending Christmas Day at Windsor Castle with Prince Charles and Camilla, as well as Prince Edward, Sophie and their two children.

Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge spent the day with their children and the Middleton family at Anmer Hall.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are believed to have spent the festive period in Montecito, California, as their daughter Lilibet celebrates her first Christmas.

The Queen mentioned young Lili in her Christmas speech. Lili was one of four royal babies this year — the others being Princess Eugenie’s son August, Princess Beatrice’s baby girl Sienna and Zara Tindall’s third baby Lucas.

This year marks the third consecutive year Harry and Meghan have been absent from royal festivities on British soil.

Coronavirus travel restrictions prevented them returning last year even if they had wanted to, and they spent Christmas of 2019 in Canada.

They had, however, spent the previous two years at Sandringham with the rest of the Royal Family.

Prior to Harry meeting Meghan, he had been the butt of the jokes on occasion when it came to giving presents.

The royals exchange gifts on Christmas Eve, and tradition dictates they all give each other cheap, joke presents.

The exchanging of gifts usually happens at 6pm on Christmas Eve, in line with the family’s German heritage.

Some of the presents over the years include a white leather toilet seat, which Princess Anne gave to older brother Prince Charles, and a shower cap which Harry gave to the Queen bearing the slogan ‘Ain’t Life a B***’.

Kate, who enjoyed a close relationship with Harry in years gone by, bought her brother-in-law a cheeky gift in 2011.

According to reports from the time, Kate shocked Harry with a ‘grow-your-own-girlfriend’ kit.

Harry had been unlucky in love, with a series of high-profile relationships not working out in the years before he met Meghan.

With presents traditionally opened in front of the whole family, Kate would have witnessed her brother-in-law’s embarrassment.

Royal expert Russell Myers appeared on Good Morning Britain earlier this week, and gave ITV presenter Andi Peters an insight into the royal festivities.

He explained: “The royals don’t really get gifts for each other at Christmas, not expensive ones anyway. I mean, what do you get the Queen that has everything?”

Yet, back in 1981, Princess Diana was not told about the long-standing tradition ahead of her first Christmas with the royals.

The young princess, just 20 at the time, bought a host of luxury items including Cashmere scarves and jumpers.

The rest of the Royal Family thought this was extremely funny, but Diana was mortified.

Having bought a Cashmere jumper for Princess Anne, she received a toilet roll holder in return.

Diana got into the spirit of the comical gifts in later years.

She once bought Sarah Ferguson a leopard print bath mat.

Kate, however, took a more thoughtful approach during her first Christmas at Sandringham.

She gave the Queen a handmade jar of chutney after using a family recipe created by her own grandmother.

Speaking in a documentary to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday five years ago, she said: “I was slightly worried about it, but I noticed the next day it was on the table.”
