Kate and William are set for a reunion with the Duke of Sussex this Saturday at Prince Philip’s funeral amid speculation regarding the brothers’ reported fallout. According to a royal expert, Kate must now “move beyond her feelings” and act to help William and Harry resolve any issues.
Journalist Daniela Elser wrote in a column for news.com.au that the Duchess is capable of being more than just an “ornamental presence” and can become a “peacemaker” in the Royal Family.
Referencing a Telegraph report stating that Kate will seek to “soothe tensions”, Ms Elser wrote: “The responsibility now rests on her narrow shoulders to try to help her husband and beloved brother-in-law heal the breach.”
According to the writer, Kate was affected by Meghan Markle’s comment during the Oprah Winfrey interview.
However, Kate may choose to move past the controversy and focus on helping mediate Harry and William’s disagreements, the journalist added.
Ms Elser wrote: “Meghan’s Oprah revelations about the royal house didn’t just take a broad aim at the whole gilded edifice but also directly at Kate herself.”
She added: “For Kate to now act as a mediator, she would have to move beyond recent events and put the greater good of the crown ahead of whatever her own feelings might be.
“There is more riding on Kate acting as conciliator par excellence than family peace.”
Prince Harry flew back into the UK from California on Sunday to attend the funeral of his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, this weekend.
The ceremony will be Harry’s first encounter with his family since relinquishing royal duties and moving to the US with his wife and son.
According to a royal source, the Duke of Sussex will choose to put disagreements with his brother on hold for the funeral.
The insider told the Daily Mirror: “Despite everything that has gone on and the wounds are still pretty raw, everyone is hoping any disputes will be parked for another day.
“This is about giving the Duke the send off he deserves surrounded by his family.”
Prince Philip’s memory will be honoured in a service at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle on Saturday.
The event will be televised and carried out in line with coronavirus measures.
