Omid Scobie, who wrote the Meghan Markle biography “Finding Freedom”, looked at the Duchess of Cambridge’s appearance at the Sarah Everard vigil and said the royal would have turned up to the event regardless of the backlash or publication of the Oprah Winfrey interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Some had targeted Kate for using the opportunity as a “PR stunt” but Mr Scobie said her attendance was always on the cards. The royal author continued by saying that the royal did something no other royal could simply by her appearance at the vigil.
Speaking on the royal podcast Heirpod, Mr Scobie said: “[Kate’s] visit was an hour before the very public vigil and that the authorities have tried to really crack down on reminding, of course, we’re still in a lockdown.
“No doubt many of you will have seen some of the horrific images that came out of that later in the evening.
“Police getting heavily involved in that sparks huge controversy in itself but Kate’s visit was an hour before this video began and she had brought flowers that she had picked from the grounds of Kensington Palace along with her.
“I think there have been a lot of comments about her not wearing a mask and what was that appropriate or not and I think these are conversations that we should always have when it comes to royals and sort of carrying out public duties.
“But this was very much a private moment and I think regardless of anything that had happened in the run-up be it the Oprah interview or any focuses on the Royal Family at that time.
“I think we would have always seen Kate at something like this or at least heard about it because it is something that she can clearly connect to.
“I think no matter what your background or your wealth, status is pre or post becoming a member of the Royal Family I think every woman in this city and cities and towns across the world can relate to that feeling of feeling unprotected or vulnerable or unsafe in their surroundings.
“I mean, I’ve certainly been that friend that any female friend of mine that I hang out with that my first question was like text when you get home, send me a photograph of the Uber licence plate or the screenshot of the booking or whatever it is.
“And that is, unfortunately, the world in which we live in and of course she no longer has to have those worries but once did.”
Sarah Everard vigil a 'super-spreading event' says Dr Hilary
ABC Foreign News Correspondent Maggie Rulli added: “I agree, it’s easy to kind of be cynical and obviously coming after the Oprah interview there’s so much extra sort of emotion and drama and gossip.
“But at the end of the day take all of that out and this was just a moment where a member of the Royal Family was able to bring even more awareness to the cause is so important.
“And that’s sort of what, at least, I want to take away from this.
“Forget all of the other nasty gossip and drama we can have time for a different day but right here at this moment just focusing on the tragedy of this woman’s death and the fact that it’s become a larger movement.
“Kate was there and we’re talking about it she made more people talk about it.”
