The Cambridges have endured a difficult start to the year, with allegations fired at the Royal Family from William’s brother Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle, and the sad passing of Prince Philip earlier this month. This week William himself also went out on the attack as he condemned the 12 football clubs for signing up to the controversial European Super League (ESL). He noted how he “shares the concerns of fans” and the “damage [the ESL] risks causing to the game we love”.

Although William often strikes a charming and calm figure when he carries out his public roles, royal correspondent Camilla Tominey detailed how the future monarch did have a fierier side to him away from the public spotlight.

Ms Tominey was discussing William’s relationship with his wife, on the Amazon Prime documentary Kate Middleton: Working Class to Windsor, and noted how the couple had to earn each other’s trust.

Being able to confide in one another, and Kate’s willingness to “not upstage her husband”, helped the Duchess of Cambridge support William when he became frustrated, the correspondent said.

She added: “I think there is a huge amount of trust there, not just between them, but their circle of friends – their so-called ‘circle of trust’. Their closest friends, who would never dream of leaking anything to the press, and really protect them.

“I think equally, one of the secrets to the success of their marriage is that they do seem much more equal than say, for instance, Charles and Diana.

“I think as well Kate has been very careful not to upstage her husband. I think she is the yin to his yang, in that he – although a level-headed, down-the-line kind of guy – can be prone to a few temper tantrums, perhaps.

“He likes to dig his heels in and knows his own mind. I think he can sometimes get quite angry, and one gets the impression that Kate is the one pulling him back, and reining him in, and saying, ‘Alright, let’s just keep calm.'”

Last month, William surprisingly spoke out after Harry and Meghan made claims regarding race and the Royal Family during their interview with TV host Oprah Winfrey.

The feature-length discussion, which aired on CBS in the US and ITV in the UK, saw the couple speak about their struggles within the Firm.

Harry also noted how William and his father Prince Charles were “trapped” inside the Royal Family, and unable to lead a life away from the monarchy.

But days after the interview aired, William responded to reporters’ questions while he and Kate toured School 21 in Stratford, east London.

As the pair readied to leave, one reporter asked William: “Is the Royal Family a racist family, sir?”

He replied: “We’re very much not a racist family.”

If Kate is able to help control William’s “anger”, she will no doubt have had to use her skills in the past weeks, particularly amidst the fallout of Harry and Meghan’s decision to quit the Royal Family.

Reports claim William was particularly frustrated with Harry after he and Meghan attempted to “blind-side” the Queen in their attempts to push through their Megxit agenda.

The rift between the two brothers reportedly began after William called Meghan “this girl”, the 2020 pro-Sussex biography Finding Freedom claimed.

One of the major sticking points for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex was over their wish to lead a “financially independent life”, while also still maintaining some of their roles within the monarchy.

A row soon erupted over their use of the phrase ‘Sussex Royal’ for their branding, particularly on their Instagram page, and personal website.

The website was launched before the so-called ‘Sandringham Summit’, the meeting of senior royals to determine how Meghan and Harry would remove themselves from the Firm.

According to the Sunday Times, this was “what upset William most”, as the website itself detailed how the Sussexes wished to leave on their terms, and have a “part-time, commercial royal future”.

A source close to William said the fact both “the content and that it’s still online is staggering”, adding: “That was it for William, he felt they’d blindsided the Queen in such an insulting and disrespectful way.”
