The disappearance and murder of 33-year-old sent shockwaves through the nation. The Duchess of Cambridge was deeply moved by the marketing executive’s tragic death.

Kate was seen attending the vigil in Clapham last month to pay her respects after also experiencing walking alone at night in London as a woman.

Before becoming a member of the Royal Family, the Duchess lived less than three miles from where Sarah went missing on March 3.

Royal biographer Penny Junor explained how the vigil trip was a “wonderful gesture”.

She told The Sunday Times: “Kate was making a very subtle point. You don’t need to make a song and dance about things.

“She showed up at Clapham quietly with absolutely no fanfare. I just thought it spoke volumes.”

Kate joined mourners earlier last month when she paid her respects and left flowers at a memorial to Sarah at Clapham Common.

According to reports, the Duchess looked “quite emotional” during the unannounced solo appearance.

At the time, a royal source told the Mirror that Kate “wanted to pay her respects to the family and to Sarah”.

They added: “She remembers what it was like to walk around London at night before she was married to Prince William.

“There was no fanfare, this was a private matter to her and she wanted to show unity with everyone else who is having the same feelings right now.”

The Duchess laid daffodils – adding to a sea of flowers left in tribute to Sarah’s death.

Later in March, Kate penned a personal letter to Sarah’s family.

A source said: “This was a deeply personal and heartfelt letter, simply to express her absolute sadness at what Sarah’s family and loved ones are going through.

“The Duchess knows that no words can change what has happened, but wanted to let them know that they and Sarah are in her thoughts.

“This was a private matter to her and she wanted to show unity with everyone else who shares these feelings.”
