Kate Middleton latest: The touching way Kate honoured Queen at royal event

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, 37, and Prince William, 37, made a striking pair as they attended the Royal Variety Performance at The London Palladium Theatre last night. The future King and Queen Consort were dressed to the nines and honoured Queen Elizabeth II with a special gesture.

Kate sent royal fans into a spin as she hit the red carpet in a gorgeous floor-length Alexander McQueen gown with lace overlay while Prince William looked dapper in a tuxedo.

Last night was the third time the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been guests of honour at the event which was attended last year by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The Cambridges attended on behalf of the Queen and made a sweet tribute to her to mark the occasion.

While Kate and Wills use Instagram less than Prince Harry and Meghan, they made a special effort to honour the Queen last night.

They posted a throwback picture of Elizabeth II attending the Royal Variety Performance in 1952 ahead of following in her footsteps.

The Kensington Royal post read: “This evening The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend the Royal Variety Performance at the Palladium Theatre, London.

“Her Majesty The Queen is photographed here arriving for the #RoyalVarietyPerformance in 1952, with The Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Margaret.

“The annual Royal Variety Performance is held in aid of the Royal Variety Charity, of which The Queen is Patron.”

“The money raised from the show helps hundreds of entertainers throughout the UK, who need help and assistance as a result of old age, ill-health, or hard times.

“The origins of the Royal Variety Performance date back to 1912 when King George V and Queen Mary agreed to attend a ‘Royal Command Performance’ at the Palace Theatre in London, in aid of the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund.

“In July 1919, the second Royal show was performed and was the first to be billed a “Royal Variety Performance”, before becoming an annual event in 1921.

“This will be the third time that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have attended the performance, following their attendance in 2014 and 2017.”

The Queen last attended the Royal Variety Performance in 2012 and since then younger royals have stepped in on her behalf.

Kate and Wills attendance last night is a clear show of their support for the Queen and reaffirms their future roles as King and Queen Consort.

The evening, which raises money for the Queen’s Royal Variety Charity has a very special place in Kate and Will’s hearts.

The last two times the Cambridges attended the event Kate has been pregnant.

In 2014 Kate was expecting Princess Charlotte, four, and in 2017 she was pregnant with Prince Louis, one.

The mother of three revealed her children would have loved to have joined them last but said she had to tell them “not on a school night”, according to royal correspondent Rebecca English.

While Kate looked as svelte as ever the Duchess has been swamped by pregnancy rumours in recent months with royal fans hopeful she and William will have a fourth child.

Bookmakers Ladbrokes has Kate at 6/1 to announce a pregnancy before the end of the year.
