Kate Middleton has ‘deliberate’ strategy to honour to Diana on every outing, experts say
Kate, Duchess of Cambridge has taken up the mantle her late mother-in-law Princess Diana created as an international fashion icon, spurring an online frenzy among shoppers seeking to steal her looks whenever she steps out on an outing. Through the years, the prospective future Queen of the UK appears to have matured a “deliberate” strategy to pay tribute to Diana with her outfit choice, according to fashion and royal experts. Commentator Erin Hill told People: “One of the special things Kate has always done is make sure that she includes these nods to Princess Diana’s memorable fashion moments.
“From her blue engagement dress to every time she stepped out after giving birth.”
The then-Kate Middleton sported a midnight blue frock as she announced her engagement to Prince William in 2010 which echoed the jacket-and-skirt suit Princess Diana paired up with the sapphire engagement ring she received from Prince Charles when the Prince and Princess of Wales revealed they were tying the know in 1979.
Royal commentator Michelle Tauber noted that the Duchess of Cambridge increasingly adopted fashion choices similar to Diana’s since joining the Royal Family.
Ms Tauber said: “When Kate welcomed her first-born, Prince George, we saw her leave the hospital in a Jenny Packham dress, which was blue with white polka dots which was actually a very similar echo of Princess Diana’s dress when she left the hospital with Prince William.

“In 2018, when Kate welcomed her third child, Prince Louis, she left the hospital in a very familiar look – a red dress with a Peter Pan collar.”
She added: “It seems to be a very deliberate choice by Kate to honour Diana in these subtle yet striking nods to her own fashion.”
On her tour of Pakistan earlier this month, the Duchess of Cambridge once again took inspiration from the Princess of Wales as she visited the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore with Prince William, donning an emerald green headscarf and a matching traditional dress (the shalwar kameez).
On another outing, she was seen sporting a turquoise ombre shalwar kameez designed by one of Diana’s favourite fashion designers, Catherine Walker.

Style expert Andrea Levinthal said: “No one has more pressure on them when it comes to what they wear than Kate Middleton.
“She is the future Queen after all. Yet, she pulls it off easily.”
Ms Levinthal added: “She always looks perfectly tailored, she always looks elegant and appropriate.
“It always looks like there’s a sense of purpose and forethought into everything she wears.”

In addition to favouring similar colours to Diana, Kate Middleton has also shown an affinity for similar patterns the Princess of Wales also liked to include in her wardrobe.
In 1991, Diana was seen wearing a red houndstooth suit by Moschino during a royal visit to Canada. In January 2018, her daughter-in-law was seen recreating her looks with a red Catherine Walker houndstooth coat dress during a visit to Sweden.
When Kate Middleton first started dating William, the now-Duchess of Cambridge reportedly claimed she had no interest in following in Diana’s footsteps.
However, according to a 2011 Vanity Fair report, Kate was later instructed to act more like her mother-in-law by royals insiders.
Ms Nicholl wrote: “I was told that the Palace had advised Kate to watch footage of Princess Diana getting in and out of her car so that she could learn how to handle the paparazzi.
“Kate told a friend it was ‘creepy’ watching the archival footage, but it seemed to work.
“Whenever she was photographed leaving her Chelsea home or the Boujis nightclub, Kate exited her car gracefully, smiled broadly, and navigated the paparazzi-lined pavements with aplomb.”
