The Duchess of Cambridge, 39, had to have the ring which was previously owned by Princess Diana altered due to it being too large. But royal fans are unable to stop the subtle change to Kate’s ring. Instead of having to resize the band, the Duchess had platinum beads added to help it fit.
The List’s Melissa Willets said: “It is pretty much impossible to imagine the world-famous, 12-carat, sapphire engagement ring Prince William gave to Kate Middleton needing to be altered in any way.
“After all, the giant oval-shaped ring features 14 sparkly diamonds in a halo, and boasts an impressive pedigree, having once belonged to Princess Diana.
“But the engagement ring would never work for her the way it was when Diana owned it, and there’s a totally understandable reason why Kate had to change something about the seemingly perfect piece of jewelry William gave her upon their betrothal.
“As Hello! reported, the band of the ring formerly worn by Princess Diana was a bit too big for the slender Kate, with jeweler G. Collins and Sons taking on the delicate task of resizing the royal ring.
“Instead of resoldering the band, the jeweler decided to add small platinum beads inside so the 18-karat-gold ring would better fit William’s soon-to-be bride.”
Prince William and Kate got engaged on November 16, 2010 but it was Kate’s mother who is said to have secured her daughter’s engagement to the future king.
Kate and William began dating in 2003 while studying at the University of St Andrews but Carole Middleton was concerned as to whether they would get married.
Mrs Middleton sat down with William and asked him if their relationship was going to result in a wedding, royal expert Katie Nicoll said.

In the Channel 5 documentary, When the Middletons met the Monarchy, it explained how long Kate waited for a proposal from William.
Narrator Glynis Barber said: “Despite establishing her place within the Windsor inner circles, two years later there was still no sign of an engagement ring.
“It is rumoured that Carole Middleton took the delicate matter of her daughter’s future into her own hands.”
Ms Nicholl said: “She sat down with William and just said to him, ‘is this going to end in a marriage?’
