Kate’s relationship with Meghan has been back in the spotlight ever since the Duchess of Sussex mentioned their supposed fallout during her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey. Meghan claimed she was not sharing details about their strained relationship in the run-up to her wedding “to be disparaging” to her sister-in-law, but so the public could “understand the truth”. She then appeared to undermine previous royal photographs of the two women having fun together when she said “my experience of the past four years is nothing like what it looks like”.

Despite being the first in the firing line, the Duchess of Cambridge has stuck to Palace protocol and not addressed any elements of the interview in public.

Royal watchers have also praised her for acting as the “peacemaker” between feuding brothers Harry and Prince William at Prince Philip’s funeral last weekend, when Meghan was absent.

Kate was seen engaging her estranged brother-in-law in conversation, before including her husband and then walking off so they could chat privately.

A Palace source even went as far as to say the Duchess of Cambridge had found Meghan “intimidating” ever since she first joined the Firm, back in 2018 — around the time of their now-famous spat about flower girl dresses.

The insider explained: “They were not only very different women with very different personalities but very different women who came from very different places.

“Kate spent 10 years as a girlfriend learning the ropes.

“Everything happened much more quickly with Harry and Meghan, who entered the royal scene with her own fully-formed ideas.

“I think Kate found her quite intimidating.”

The two women, both 39, had significantly different careers before becoming working royals.

Kate worked for Jigsaw before moving to her parents’ company Party Pieces, while Meghan had an acting career in Hollywood before finding fame on Suits, and a growing reputation in the humanitarian world after becoming a UN Ambassador.

She had a strong fan following too, aided by her now-defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig.

In comparison, Kate had never given an interview before her engagement announcement in 2010 and never spoke to the press despite being in a relationship with William since 2003.

Royal commentator Camilla Tominey pointed out that there was a clear “chasm between the introverted Home Counties girl and the extroverted star of US legal drama Suits” from the start, and this became increasingly obvious throughout Meghan’s time as a working royal.

Writing for The Telegraph, she said a “distinction was made between Kate marrying into the Firm as an ‘unknown’ and Meghan already having a profile” early on in their relationship.

While Meghan’s open nature has only grown her expansive fanbase, royal writer Britt Stephens claimed that “we’ll never know how interesting Kate really is”.

Kate has maintained a sense of mystery throughout her time as a working royal, and has rarely divulged details about her personal life.

Some have perceived this as a sign of her shy nature, while others believe her strict adherence to the Palace’s tight-lipped way of life shows she is preparing to one day become Queen consort.

Ms Tominey explained: “The parallels between unflappable Kate and Harry’s famously conflict-avoiding grandmother are becoming increasingly uncanny.”

Finding Freedom’s authors, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, claimed the two women’s distant relationship came down to their very different personalities.

They claimed in the 2020 book: “Meghan would agree with the assessment that the Duchesses were not the best of friends.

“Their relationship hadn’t progressed much since Meghan was Harry’s girlfriend.”

They alleged Kate felt she had little in common with her sister-in-law “other than the fact that they lived at Kensington Palace”.

They continued: “The two Duchesses’ relationship had struggled to move past the distant politeness of when they first met.

“Their cordial but distant rapport was apparent when the pair appeared alongside each other at the King Power Royal Charity Polo Day.”

They also claimed that at Meghan and Harry’s final royal engagement last March, the Duchess of Sussex “tried to make eye contact with Kate” but the “Duchess barely acknowledged her”.

A royal source even told Us Weekly that Kate and Meghan have not spoken “directly” in more than a year.

The tensions between Harry and William are also said to have “spilled over to Meghan and Kate’s relationship, making it very hard for them to be friends”.
