The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn yesterday to mark the NHS’ special anniversary. Kate appeared to make a sweet tribute to her late mother in law, Princess Diana, during the visit with her choice of outfit.

The Duchess wore a deep blue £535 Beulah London midi dress with a striking white collar and geometric floral pattern.

The outfit bears resemblance to a dress worn by Princess Diana in 1985, which is similar in both style and length.

Kate’s subtle nod to the late Princess of Wales is particularly pertinent as the late royal would have celebrated her 59th birthday on July 1.

The dress worn by Diana was characterised by a bold white collar, long sleeves, polka dots and was midi in length.

She wore the stunning dress for photographs taken in her living room at Kensington Palace in October 1985.

The series of snaps show Diana, who was 24 at the time, with her lady-in-waiting Anne Beckwith-Smith.

Diana styled the outfit with slingback black and white heels and delicate stud earrings.

Kate styled the similar dress slightly differently to her late mother-in-law, with her hair tied back in a neat low pony tail, a set of £800 diamond and yellow gold earrings by designer Patrick Mavros and navy heels.

It is thought the Duchess chose the dress to symbolise the colours of the NHS, as that was the main purpose of yesterday’s visit.

The Cambridges met with healthcare workers who have been fighting to save lives during the coronavirus crisis at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn, Norfolk.

The engagement marked the couple’s first joint face-to-face visit since lockdown.

The hospital, which celebrates its own 40th birthday later this month, serves more than 330,000 people across Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire and has treated 450 patients with coronavirus.

Kate and William enjoyed afternoon tea with doctors, nurses and other staff who work at the hospital.

They chatted to staff from a distance in a marquee set up with tables, chairs and party balloons.

The royals made sure they used hand sanitiser as soon as they arrived for the visit.

Natalie English, senior sister for critical care, gave them three small knitted key rings staff had made for Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, two.

Kate and William are spending the lockdown at their Norfolk residence Anmer Hall with their three children.

The couple have recently started stepping out for face-to-face royal engagements as restrictions have eased.

The Duke visited the Rose and Crown pub in Snettisham last week, ahead of the reopening of pubs.
