Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, “helped highlight the issues that need to be resolved around” Sarah Everard’s case, a royal commentator has claimed. Rupert Bell, talkRADIO’s Royal Correspondent, spoke about the future Queen Consort’s visit to the Clapham Common vigil. He slammed online critics for saying it was nothing but a “PR move” in the wake of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s candid Oprah interview.

Mr Bell told listeners: “Go onto social media and some people say it’s a cynical ploy by Kate to go and get all the sympathy vote.

“Other people are saying well done and that she’s absolutely right to go and do it.

“Opinions are divided over it. It’s that simple.

“Again, it comes down to if you’re in the Meghan camp or Kate camp.”

He continued: “She’s damned if she did, damned if she didn’t.

“She didn’t wear a mask, and people are saying she was flaunting rules there.

“Here’s the point: if she felt right to go, I’m sure she had to take advice before she decided to go, whether it was deemed the right thing to do.

“She would have had people advising her, saying, ‘if you want to go, that’s your call’. As a private citizen, she’s perfectly entitled.”

The royal correspondent added: “It makes a statement, and probably has helped highlight the issues that need to be resolved around this dreadful case.

“So therefore, as far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing sinister about it.

“But clearly there will be people looking at it, thinking that this is a PR move for the Cambridges to try and get the moral high ground against Meghan, and that’s a sad thing.”

Kensington Palace claim that Kate attended because she “wanted to pay her respects to the family and to Sarah”.

A spokesperson added: “She remembers what it was like to walk around London at night before she was married.”

Ms Everard had gone missing while walking from her friend’s house in Clapham Junction to her own home in Brixton on March 3.

Her body was found in woodland near Ashford, Kent, a week later.

Met Police officer Wayne Couzens has been charged with her murder and kidnapping, and is set to appear at the Old Bailey later.
