Kate is gearing up to celebrate her 40th birthday on Sunday. The Duchess of Cambridge, it is widely believed, will celebrate the day privately as she has done in previous years.

However, one royal expert thinks Kate will publicly mark reaching this milestone in a way sure to delight royal watchers.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “Her 40th birthday is likely to be celebrated privately.

“Covid restrictions remain in place, this means that it is likely to be scaled down and she reportedly didn’t want a large celebration anyway.

“A new photograph is expected to be released.”

Senior members of the Royal Family normally release pictures to mark key dates.

Last April, Kate and Prince William marked their 10th wedding anniversary by sharing two new portraits of themselves taken at their London home.

Moreover, they surprised the public by releasing a brief film in which they could be seen playing with their children George, Charlotte and Louis near their home in Norfolk.

In December, Kensington Palace released a picture of the Cambridges as their Christmas card, taken in Jordan during the family’s holidays in October.

In January 2021, Kate did not publicly mark her 39th birthday by releasing a never-before-seen photograph.

Her last birthday fell in the midst of the third national lockdown, enforced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in late December 2020 to tackle a surge of Covid infection.

On the day of the Duchess’ birthday, Kensington Palace released a picture of Kate taken during a royal engagement alongside a sombre message of thanks in line with the worrying situation the country was living.

It read: “Thank you for your kind wishes on The Duchess’ birthday.

“Birthdays have been very different in recent months, and our thoughts continue to be with all those working on the front line at this hugely challenging time.”

Similarly to Mr Fitzwilliams, another royal expert, Jonathan Sacerdoti, believes it is likely Kate won’t host major celebrations on her birthday due to the high number of COVID-19 cases recorded every day in the country.

Discussing the Covid restrictions in England at the moment, he told Us Weekly: “There’s no lockdown in place, but [there’s] some resistance to big gatherings.

“It’s something that people just maybe don’t think is the best thing to do.”

The Duchess, Mr Sacerdoti added, may be choosing to do “something lower key” for her birthday to “set a good example”.

Kate is the second member of the Royal Family to be turning 40 in recent months.

In August last year, the Duchess of Sussex reached this milestone and publicly celebrated it by putting the spotlight on an initiative she created called 40×40.

To kick-start this project, Meghan asked 40 of her friends, to donate 40 minutes of their time to mentor women who lost their job during the pandemic and are now trying to rejoin the workforce.

To publicise the initiative and invite more people to join her in this effort, she filmed a video with her friend and actress Melissa McCarthy.

Kate was last seen in public on Christmas Day, which she celebrated with her husband and children at Anmer Hall.

The Cambridges were joined by a few members of the Middleton family – including Kate’s parents Carole and Michael.

The Duchess was spotted leaving St Mary Magdalene Church in a car with Prince William and their three children.
