Kate and William’s tenth wedding anniversary is approaching in April, and in that time they have become the Royal Family’s poster couple. However, recent allegations from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry during their interview with Oprah Winfrey risk tarnishing the Cambridges’ image. There was a suggestion from the Sussexes that key members of the Royal Family were “trapped” within the monarchy.

Meghan then directed a dig towards royal women, and said: “That’s the sad irony of the last four years… I’ve advocated for so long for women to use their voice and then I was silent.”

Kate has not addressed the interview directly, and instead has toed the Firm’s official line of responding to the matters raised “privately”.

However, an Amazon Prime documentary — Chasing the Royals — suggested Kate knew she was going to have to be “silent” like Meghan when she signed up to be a royal.

Speaking in 2010, royal commentator Andrew Pierce said: “She [Kate] has entered into a Faustian pact.

“She will be quiet, she will be obedient, she’ll be dutiful.

“She will look beautiful. She’ll do the right thing. And if she gets too bored — too bad.

“Buy another tiara, bake some more cakes, have another party in Wales, hold a banquet, do some charity work, be a lady who lunches — but you’re not going to rock the boat, you’re not going to brief the media.

“And, unlike Diana, you will not talk to the media directly or indirectly.”

He said that William still “distrusts the media” and he does not want his wife “to be sucked into that vortex” which overshadowed Princess Diana’s time as a royal.

This is a stark contrast to Meghan’s decision to speak out about her life as a royal less than 12 months after officially leaving the Firm, last March.

When speaking to Oprah, she added that she had considered an interview with Oprah before her wedding even went ahead back in May 2018 — but that the Firm had prevented her from doing so.

She said: “I couldn’t have said ‘yes’ to you then. It wasn’t my choice to make.”

While the Palace refused to comment, aides told The Sun: “The Duchess was not stopped from doing anything.

“But it is not exactly a surprise there would be misgivings about a new senior member of the Royal Family holding a celebrity interview on US television just weeks before a wedding.”

Meghan reportedly wanted to have another interview after Archie’s birth in May 2019, this time with US broadcaster Gayle King.

This was allegedly also overruled by the Palace, over fears it would “alienate the UK press”, according to sources.

Kate did not agree to any royal interviews — aside from when her engagement was announced — until October 2019.

She spoke alongside William about her charitable work when on tour in Pakistan — but, notably, she made no reference to her personal life.

The Amazon Prime documentary also alleged that Kate’s role at the forefront of the Royal Family was particularly important because she and William were expected to “bring back the glory days of the House of Windsor”.

Mr Pierce added: “This is a royal marriage that absolutely cannot go wrong under any circumstances whatsoever.”

He pointed out that, despite being friends with William since 2001, “she never let him down, she never uttered a word” to the public or press about their friendship, romance or two temporary breakups.

He added: “She was absolutely discreet, absolutely loyal.”

The Daily Mail journalist then claimed “those attributes are almost as important as being madly in love with someone”, particularly for a royal.

It’s clear that interactions with the media are a big part of the Cambridges’ relationship — Newsweek’s editor Tina Brown even alleged that William and Kate put off their engagement in 2010 because of a row over paparazzi.

Some critics believe Kate was particularly upset over Meghan’s mention of her during her interview with Oprah because of the “never complain, never explain” mantra of the Royal Family.

Royal commentator Katie Nicholl said Kate looked “hurt and saddened” during her first post-interview royal engagement.

She also noted that Kate did not say anything about it because she “is not in a position to respond”.

She told OK! Magazine: “Kate felt it was all sorted, so to have it brought up again was mortifying.

“Kate is not in a position to respond and Meghan and Harry know that.”
