Kate Middleton and William thank NHS staff on Burns Night

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge recorded a video message praising the work of NHS Tayside. And 200 staff at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee tucked into a lunch of haggis, neeps and tatties thanks to NHS Charities Together, which William and Kate support as patrons, and Tayside Health Fund.

Kate, 39, stunned in a tartan dress as she was joined by William, 38, for the video message on Burns Night – – the annual celebration held on the national poet of Scotland Robert Burns’ birthday.

William said: “Hello to everyone at NHS Tayside.

“We know Burns Night is a special evening for Scots around the world – a time to come together to eat, drink and to celebrate the life and work of Robert Burns.”

Kate continued: “Sadly this year is a little different.

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

“And for many of you working on the frontline, tonight will be a very different occasion, as you work tirelessly through this pandemic to protect the most vulnerable in our society.”

William added: “We want to say a huge thank you for all of the work you are doing and the sacrifices you are making.

“As a token of our appreciation, we’ve teamed up with NHS Charities Together to provide you with a Haggis dinner.”

Kate continued: “We hope you enjoy it, and look forward to better times together soon.”

The royal couple both finished by saying: “Slàinte Mhath!”

The video message was played over lunchtime to a multi-disciplinary Covid-19 response team who work in the dedicated Covid-19 Intensive Care and High Dependency Units at the hospital.

William and Kate are known as the Earl and Countess of Strathearn north of the border.

They met at the University of St Andrews and are regular visitors to the Queen’s Balmoral estate in the Highlands.

Aides declined to say whether the couple normally celebrated Burns Night.

It comes after they visited Scotland as part of their royal train tour of Great Britain last month to thank key and frontline workers.

Royal fans gushed over William and Kate’s Burns Night gesture on social media.

One Twitter user wrote: “Aww it’s so nice of our Duke and Duchess to do this! Love how much they support the front line workers.”

Another commented: “This is such a lovely gesture. Your dedication to making sure your NHS workers feel the love is very admirable.”

A third added: “Happy Burns Night Scotland! I hope NHS Tayside enjoy their meal on their shift break sending my love.”

Another said on Instagram: “Thanks so much for remembering us Scots on Burns night.”

One more commented: “‪Aww it’s so nice of our Duke and Duchess to do this! Love how much they support the front line workers.”

The Queen also celebrated Burns Night on the Royal Family’s social media accounts by posting lines from the poem My Heart’s In The Highlands.

And Prince Charles shared a video message and recited some of the words to Burns’ famous song Auld Lang Syne.
