The story of their love affair is a well told tale, that many a royal author has written about. Yet, fate brought the two together several years earlier at a school hockey match, possibly helping to ignite the initial sparks of a future Royal affair. At the time, William was a pupil at Ludgrove school, while Kate went to St Andrew’s prep.
In her book ‘Kate: The Future Queen’, Katie Nicholl describes the moment when the two future lovers first set eyes on one another.
She writes: “Although she wasn’t especially interested in boys, the arrival of one particular young man had caught her attention.
“Nearby Ludgrove Prep school would often play matches against St. Andrew’s Prep, and there was much excitement when Prince William, a left back on Ludgrove’s Colts team, came to St. Andrew’s to play a hockey match when he was nine years old.
“William, like Kate, loved sports and was one of the best hockey and rugby players in his year.
“Of course, the arrival of the prince generated a flurry of excitement.”
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge studied History of Art together at St Andrew’s.
Kate admitted in their 2010 engagement interview, that it took a while for the two to meet and become friends.
She explained: “Actually, William wasn’t there for quite a bit of the time initially, he wasn’t there for Fresher’s Week.
“So it did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other, but we did become very close friends from quite early on.
