Kate and William’s new behind the scenes pictures ahead of prize

New pictures reveal an enticing glimpse into the climactic event of Kate and William’s three-day US trip. In one of the black and white pics, Prince William can be seen smiling as he speaks with a colleague during rehearsals for the Earthshot Prize Ceremony, which will reward five notable individuals or organisations for their contributions to fighting climate change – with an emphasis on innovative solutions. 

Another picture captures Kate as she walks across a beautifully designed stage in a dress, also taken during rehearsals. The stage has been clearly designed to reflect the theme, with projected artwork and an arrangement of foliage around the edge. 

The third pic gives a snapshot of the backstage arrangements with a signpost for Earthshot, which is being held at MGM Music Hall in Fenway, Boston, with the Prince’s address starting at 9.45pm GMT.

Each year for the next decade, five solutions will be awarded £1million and the accolade of becoming one of only 50 winners of The Earthshot Prize.

By its conclusion, a total of £50million will have been donated to green causes.

Now its second year, the prize ceremony boasts a star-studded setlist including Billie Eilish, Annie Lennox, Ellie Goulding and Chloe x Halle.

Meanwhile, an incredible list of presenters will host the evening, including the Prince and Princess of Wales themselves, Sir David Attenborough, American actors Rami Malek, Catherine O’Hara, Shailene Woodley and Daniel Dae Kim and British radio and TV personality Clara Amfo.

Sir David said that all of this year’s 15 finalists were “deeply inspiring”, adding that they “are dedicating their lives to building solutions that will repair our planet.”

A royal spokesperson said of the project: “The prize has become the prince’s Superbowl moment of the year, and he looks forward to continuing to use the platform each year to shine a light on some of the most impactful projects doing amazing things around the world to save our planet’s future.”

Two British contenders are in the running for the impressive prize. 

First is Notpla, a London-based start-up run by Pierre Paslier and Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez, which is involved in turning seaweed and plants into biodegradable packaging in the hope of eradicating single-use plastic. Secondly, Low Carbon Materials, from County Durham, is also in the running. This initiative turns otherwise non-recyclable waste materials into carbon-zero concrete building blocks.

The Prince of Wales had been inspired to begin it on a trip to Namibia, Tanzania and Kenya in the autumn of 2018, during which he was moved by the work of local communities and conservationists to safeguard the natural world.

Earlier today, the Prince wrote in an article for Huffpost about drawing inspiration from former US President John F Kennedy when it came to starting the Earthshot Prize, as well as his own “stubborn optimism”. 

Commenting that he “believes in the power of human ingenuity”, William quoted former Mr Kennedy – who was born in Boston, where the Cambridges are visiting – saying, “we choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard” as part of his motivation behind Earthshot. 

Explaining why he created the prize, William wrote: “We face a challenge as seemingly insurmountable as putting a person on the moon: reversing the damage that has been done to our planet, and putting ourselves on a path toward a more sustainable future.”
