Kate and William told to stay together on royal visits for better optics

Royal Editor Russell Myers on Prince William and Kate’s popularity

Prince William and Princess Kate have been encouraged to appear together in public “as often as possible” by a PR expert, after they have recently carried out a string of separate engagements.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are always well received whether together or separate, however it has been noted that Kate did not accompany her husband on a recent diplomatic mission to New York, and she is not expected to fly with him to Singapore for the Earthshot Awards in November, either.

Back in the UK Kate has been in Leeds, Lancaster and Kent for solo visits, while last week William was in Swindon for his own charity engagement.

Although their parenting duties are likely to have a significant impact on who carries out which visits, Ed Coram-James, chief executive of PR firm Go Up, told Express.co.uk that when the couple are together they are the “perfect PR foils” for each other.

He said: “I would encourage William and Kate to appear in public, as a pair, as often as possible. They are the perfect PR foils for one another, with their strengths and weaknesses complementing each other’s.

“In many ways, you want the Princess of Wales to do much of the PR heavy lifting. She naturally softens the image of the Royal Family.

“I would argue that, whereas William is naturally relatable and human, he does weigh slightly stronger towards the Kingly side than the human side. Kate, on the other hand, appears Queenly, but errs slightly more to the human side.

“William, by association, makes Kate appear more royal and Kate, by association, makes William appear more human. Put the two together and, wham, you have the perfect balance between kingly and human.”

Mr Coram-James pointed out that Kate and William’s different backgrounds complement how they approach royal visits, as well Kate may be more relatable William’s status as a royal adds gravitas.

He added: “From an optics point of view William and Kate work very well together and compliment one another’s strengths and weaknesses. If Kate brings in the crowds with her relatability and popularity, those crowds are then impressed by how Kingly and dutiful William looks. Yin and Yang.

“If anything, I would simply be trying to work out how to ensure that the couple are together even more often, so that they are rarely seen without one another at big events.”

Kate has often been hailed as one of the most popular royals, ever since she married Prince William in April 2011, with royal author and historian Gareth Russell believing the patriotism in the UK at the time added to her popularity.

He noted their wedding came the year before the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, when there was a great spirit of optimism in the air.

However he told GB News there was no “pivotal moment” which catapulted her into the spotlight as she sees her royal life as a “marathon, not a sprint”.

He added: “It is a gathering snowball, and it’s something that’s sustainable and long-term. That’s something she would prefer as opposed to very short intense bursts of attention and popularity.”
