Kate and William explained to friends why they didn’t have in-depth conversations with the Duke of Sussex when they met him for the funeral of Prince Philip, royal commentator Robert Lacey said. In an updated version of his book Battle of Brothers serialised in Times2, Mr Lacey also dismissed reports of a lengthy meeting between Prince Harry, Prince William and Prince Charles.
Speaking about Harry’s return to the UK and his reunion with members of the Royal Family following the funeral of Prince Philip, Mr Lacey wrote: “Harry, for his part, proudly showed around snaps of Archie on his mobile phone, then later let it be known via the ever helpful [royal author Omid] Scobie that he had seen the Queen twice before he got back on the plane to California on Monday.
“His grandmother liked to walk her dogs in the grounds of Frogmore House, so it seemed likely that he had joined her there.
“Meanwhile, William and Kate, after saying goodbye to Charles, who headed to Wales where he had been mourning at his Llandovery estate, went back to Kensington Palace together to put the children to bed.
“They told friends that they could see no point in talking to Harry, since any discussion of substance would go straight back to Meghan to be leaked out via Oprah or some other tentacle of the Sussex network that had not stopped spreading stories in the weeks since the interview that the couple’s friends had promised would be their final word.”
Commenting on Mr Lacey’s claims that Kate and William feared leaks, royal expert Angela Levin wrote on Twitter: “It makes total sense not to have private talks with Harry or anyone if they are going to reveal all to the world.”
Contacted by Express.co.uk, Kensington Palace did not comment.
These claims come after Gayle King, a US broadcaster and friend of Meghan and Harry, reported during a US morning news show what the Sussexes had told her about a conversation the Duke had had with his brother and father.
She first confirmed a report published in the Sunday Times claiming Prince Harry, Prince William and Prince Charles had spoken over the phone a few days after the broadcasting of the Sussexes’ interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Ms King then reported what Meghan and Harry told her about the private conversation.
She said in mid-March: “It’s true Harry has talked to his brother and he has talked to his father too.
“The word I was given was that those conversations were not productive.
“But they are glad that they have at least started a conversation.
“And I think what is still upsetting to them is that the palace keeps saying they want to work it out privately, but yet they believe these false stories are coming out that are very disparaging against Meghan still.”
Ms King added: “No one in the Royal Family has talked to Meghan yet.”
Harry travelled to the UK for the first time in 13 months in April to attend the funeral of his grandfather.
In the aftermath of his trip, it was claimed he had held a summit with William and Charles after the funeral service.
But, as highlighted by Mr Lacey, both the Firm and the Sussex camp played down these reports.
However, royal watchers were relieved to see the ice between Prince William and Prince Harry broken following the service – with the help of the Duchess of Cambridge.
Kate was spotted starting a conversation with her brother-in-law outside of St George’s Chapel while her husband was speaking to the Dean of Windsor.
As the royals started walking back to the castle, Kate appeared to draw into the conversation also with Prince William.
She then swiftly left the brothers alone to speak and discreetly joined Sophie, Countess of Wessex, who was walking behind her.
Prince William and Prince Harry are expected to reunite on July 1.
On the day Princess Diana would have turned 60, a statue commissioned by her sons will be unveiled in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace, believed to be her favourite spot at her London residence.
