Kate and Prince William joined forces on Monday as they headed to Westminster Abbey. The Duke and Duchess appeared sombre in their roles as they met some of the politicians, dignitaries and foreign leaders in attendance.

The Commonwealth Day service takes place yearly at Westminster Abbey and celebrates the 54-strong membership of independent nations working together to achieve economic, environmental, social and democratic goals.

The Commonwealth, a union that has been nurtured by the Queen as its Head during her record-breaking reign, encompasses a population of 2.4 billion people.

This year’s service is even more poignant as it will reflect not just on the 2022 Commonwealth theme, “Delivering a Common Future”, but also on the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Moreover, this is the first in-person gathering of Commonwealth leaders and members since the beginning of the pandemic.

Last year, working royals carried out a series of engagements and duties to mark the day after the service had to be cancelled due to the Covid crisis.

For this important day, Kate and Prince William set aside their playful rivalry, which was sparked in early February after the Queen appointed the Duchess as patron of the Rugby Football Union.

As patron of the English rugby team, Kate was put on a collision course with Prince William who, in turn, has been the patron of the Welsh Rugby Union since 2016.

Husband and wife came head to head as patrons of two different teams for the first time during the England v Wales Six Nations match last month.

Each royal was seen donning a scarf bearing the colours of their team.

Kate and William were accompanied to the stadium by their eldest son Prince George who, during a meeting with representatives of the unions, was asked which teams he is backing.

Prince William teased Kate about their rivalry also during the couple’s visit to Wales on St David’s Day.

As noted by the Duke, while visiting Pant Farm Kate supported Wales by wearing a red scarf as a silent tribute to the nation.
